Breaking News! Code Yikes! How hot is this El Nino? Not only is the sea-surface temperatures in the Nino 3.4 region on June 13th the hottest on record since 1982, the temperature is a mind-blowing 0.72°C hotter than any previous June 13th.

The world has warmed by around 1.4C since 1850. It took 148 years for the first half of that warming to occur, and just 27 years for the second half!

New study adds evidence that the "Cold Blob" in the North Atlantic is proof of AMOC slow-down. And it can only be explained by changes in ocean heat transport (impacted by us). Continued slowdown, even shut-down cannot be excluded. An unacceptable risk. cnn.com/2026/06/12/climate/c…

At a time of growing geopolitical fragmentation, it is increasingly difficult to imagine the UN forging the same broad consensus around a new global development framework that it did with the SDGs, which end in 2030. I'm thinking about what comes next. chinadaily.com.cn/a/202606/1…

🆕 study: Climate change, land use and water use are altering the global #freshwater cycle at an increasing pace. Dry and wet anomalies now occur about twice as often as they did in the early 20th century, with climatic factors being the dominant driver. pik-potsdam.de/en/news/lates…

🆕The Earth is accumulating heat at an accelerating rate. Human-caused warming reached 1.37°C above pre-industrial levels in 2025 & is expected to exceed 1.5°C within ~4 years. PIKs W. Lamb led the report’s assessment of global greenhouse gas emissions. pik-potsdam.de/en/news/lates…

New Anthropocene paper. Earth still operates in "Holocene logic", buffering heat imbalance. Anthropocene = Pressure. But, BAU, reaching 3°C in 2100 & we get "stuck" in a Hothouse trajectory for 1000 years. Anthropocene risks turning into a state. No Good. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.…

Three scenarios discussed in our article illustrate the choices and risks we face. Let's aim for the green one. We still have a choice, and are not yet destined to bequeath a much less habitable planet to future generations. Our children and grandchildren deserve a fair chance.

We are in the Age of Humans - the Anthropocene. Our new article (open access) shows how even with a moderate future emissions scenario, global temperature will still be elevated by 3-4°C in the year 3000! Lifetime of our CO2 in the air is that long. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.…

World Cup will have hydration breaks each 15 min to reduce dangerous heat risk. Remember, this is not a FIFA rule softening the efforts of the players. It is because we are heating the planet to new unprecedented levels. We are breaking game. npr.org/2026/06/04/nx-s1-574…

Oxford, the longest running continuous weather station in UK history, with temperature observations stretching back to 1815, has preliminarily broken its maximum temperature record for May yesterday by OVER 3ºC with a temperature of 33.7ºC. Unprecedented in its 211-year history.

Breaking: New study using observational constraints projects that the Atlantic Ocean circulation #AMOC will weaken ~50% by 2100, even for medium emissions and without Greenland melting. Seriously bad news. theguardian.com/environment/…

Has the Atlantic overturning #AMOC shut down before? It very likely has, e.g. during Heinrich Event 4 around 40.000 years ago, in response to ice sliding into the Atlantic the water. Climate model simulations of this agree well with paleoclimate data. nature.com/articles/s41561-0…

📣 Just out: our new study on the 'cold blob' in the Northern Atlantic. Is that due to ocean currents bringing less heat there, or due to more heat being lost through the sea surface? Our data analysis strongly suggests it's due to #AMOC slowing. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.…
