Yesterday, we had the distinct honour of hosting Aki Nishio, Vice President of Development Finance, World Bank Group, and Roya Rahmani, Director for Global Engagement, World Bank Group, for a candid and deeply engaging conversation with Kenyan youth, convened by Jacob's Ladder Africa (JLA) and moderated by Sellah Bogonko
@Sellahb, Co-Founder & CEO, JLA.
The discussion went beyond rhetoric to the realities shaping the lives of young people across Kenya and the continent, such as unemployment, limited access to opportunity, and the pressing question of how global financial institutions translate investment into tangible economic outcomes for youth.
In an open exchange marked by honesty and reflection, young people directly challenged, questioned, and engaged with the role of development finance in shaping Africa’s future. At the same time, the conversation was also a reminder that despite the frustrations and barriers many young people face, resilience, preparation, and active participation remain critical. Young people must not only demand accountability from institutions but also continue positioning themselves for leadership, innovation, and the opportunities they want to see created.
With the World Bank Group putting job creation at the center of what it does, the discussion also highlighted how IDA is investing in pathways to economic opportunity through:
1. Expanding electricity access across Kenya
2. Supporting entrepreneurship and small businesses
3. Apprenticeship and skills development programs
4. Grants and support for young innovators
As we continue to centre youth participation and voices in shaping Africa’s economic future, we invite young people across the continent to take part in our Pan-African Research Survey on entrepreneurship and innovation in Africa.
This survey is another opportunity for young Africans to speak directly to the realities, barriers, ambitions, and opportunities shaping their economic and/or entrepreneurial journeys and to help influence conversations, policies, and solutions grounded in lived experience.
Your voice matters. Your experience matters. And the future being discussed cannot be built without you.
