After a hard fought campaign, I want to share a few thoughts as Matt Mahan’s bid for California governor concludes this primary season. There’s no better feeling than working for the candidate you deeply believe in. Thank you @mattmahansj for running and for the experience of a lifetime working on your behalf. It’s been an honor. And thank you to the people of California who voted to support his vision. The movement for pragmatic progressivism continues. As Matt said in his remarks tonight, ā€œI am a get s**t done Democratā€, and that ethos continues to be exactly what we need in this state and across this country.

He ran an honorable and good campaign under the circumstances. He was recruited by the business community to run after Rick Caruso decided not to. In the end, it felt like he was persuading people that he was the best candidate for Governor but many thought he wasn’t viable and needed to strategically vote. I have plenty of critiques of the campaign. I only decided to vote for him in April myself. But I think people are overreacting.
New from me: Matt Mahan entered the CA gov's race pitching himself as the antidote to Sacramento’s dysfunction. By the time polls closed in the June 2 primary, according to close to a dozen sources, his campaign had devolved into its own form of chaos. sfstandard.com/2026/06/10/ch…

Grateful to advance to the general election after more than 300,000 voters participated in our primary election. I salute my fellow candidates for the campaigns they ran. Over the coming months, I’ll continue meeting with people across the district—residents, working families, business owners, elected officials, and community leaders—to hear their ideas and share my vision for SD24. This is the community where I grew up, where Claire and I are raising our kids—so this is personal, not just political. We have work to do to change the way this state is governed: to make it easier and more affordable for families and small businesses; to confront crime and homelessness; to address the big challenges of our future like AI and climate change and insurance; and to fix our toxic and divisive politics. I look forward to a campaign that focuses on issues and solutions, and I am confident that—with your help—we will win in November.

This week on Duke’s Download, I’m doing something a little different for Pride Month. I revisited three conversations that have really stayed with me — with Greg Cope‑White, Ross Mathews, and Dustin Lance Black — because their stories feel more relevant right now than ever. We talk about serving openly (and not so openly), growing up without role models, fighting for marriage equality, and why LGBTQ rights are never something we can take for granted. For me, this episode is a reminder that Pride isn’t just parades and rainbow flags — it’s a call to engage, to vote, and to protect the progress so many fought for. Thanks for being here. 🌈 Watch on YouTube at link below or listen wherever you get your podcasts. youtu.be/sVlH3RsD9vY?is=kzUP…

Ditto! All in for @XavierBecerra
This was a historic race — and it was an honor to run it alongside so many dedicated people willing to serve this state and fight to make it the best it can be. I want to congratulate @XavierBecerra. His steadiness, competence, and know-how will serve this state well. I’m looking forward to sitting down with him in the coming weeks to discuss our state’s biggest problems and the solutions that are showing promise here in San Jose.

Primary night is behind us, and I’m sharing my honest reflections on the June 2 California primary elections — especially the race for California governor. For the past several months, I worked as an advisor and LGBTQ liaison for San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan’s gubernatorial campaign, traveling across the state and helping build support in Southern California. In this episode, I talk about what it was like campaigning statewide while Matt was still serving as mayor, the pace and scale of running in California, and why the campaign ultimately fell short. I’ve always believed in working for candidates I genuinely believe in — not just perceived front-runners — and I’m proud of the campaign we ran. Now, with the primary decided, I’m committed to supporting the Democratic nominee for governor. The stakes are too high. California must remain a progressive, pro-democracy stronghold, especially in this political moment. If you care about the future of California politics, pragmatic progressive leadership, and keeping our state a bulwark for democracy — this conversation is for you. I want to congratulate my fellow candidates on a hard-fought campaign. While this campaign for governor ends tonight, our mission has only begun. We’ve proven that a better California is possible. Because we’re doing it right here in San Jose. We didn’t do it by promising the moon. We did it by promising progress. Progress on building housing; progress on reducing homelessness. Progress on improving public safety. And proving we could actually achieve it. Because the truth is – people don’t care about big promises. They’ve heard them all before. The answer is making our government deliver better results. Rebuild trust by showing that the problems we see everyday are actually solvable. And hold ourselves accountable to get it done. Not just here in San Jose, not just in California, but across this nation. We will take tonight to celebrate all we have accomplished. But we’re back to work tomorrow. This is not the last time I will ask Californians to come together to fight for a better state. Because we can change the conversation. We can change the course of our future. We gave Californians hope. Because we proved we can do better.
