For a while, it delivered—right up until Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson decided to turn the stage into a pulpit and lecture the very people who paid to see him. The trouble hit early. As the band set up "She Talks to Angels," their mascot appeared on the big screen dressed as Uncle Sam. The Tampa crowd did what Southern audiences have always done: they let out a loud, spontaneous "USA!" chant. Robinson killed the moment instantly. He mocked the reaction, then launched into a scolding rant about fear and ignorance, jabbing at anyone who dared push back. The more the room resisted, the louder he got. By the end, a big chunk of the crowd had seen enough and walked out. This wasn’t a political rally. It was a rock show in the Red South—where patriotism isn’t hidden and “USA!” is as natural as hot dogs at a ballgame. That cheer isn’t about ignorance; it’s about pride in the country. Turning on paying fans for showing it says far more about the performer’s disconnect than it does about the audience. Musicians can hold whatever opinions they want. What they don’t get to do is treat a ticket-buying crowd like a captive audience for their personal grievances—especially at today’s prices. Fans come to forget the world’s problems for a few hours, not sit through a sermon from a frontman who seems more interested in scolding than entertaining. They remain one of the best bands working today. Openers Southall also brought a strong set. Those are the names worth remembering from this tour. A stage is a privilege, not a soapbox. The people in the seats pay the bills and deserve the music they came to hear. When a headliner forgets that, he does more damage to his supporting acts than to anyone else. The tour continues through St. Augustine and into the Carolinas. Southern crowds wear their patriotism openly, so it will be interesting to see if Robinson learns to read the room or keeps delivering lectures. For anyone thinking about tickets, the advice is simple: go for Whiskey Myers. When the Black Crowes take the stage, you’ll know what to do—keep walking. As the old saying goes: “The seats are empty.
