I write with mixed feelings to announce that today I will be sending a letter to the Speaker of the Alberta Legislative Assembly, advising of my intent to resign my position as the MLA for Edmonton Strathcona, effective December 30, 2024. It was last January this year when I announced I would be stepping down as leader of Alberta’s NDP. I was excited and proud to see our membership swell to over 80,000 members as four worthy contestants sought their votes in June of this year. Naheed Nenshi’s selection represents a tremendous opportunity for all Albertans seeking practical solutions to the affordability crisis, along with a genuine commitment to fixing our healthcare so that all Albertans can get the support they need no matter where they live or how much they earn. It has been an indescribable honour to represent the people of my neighbourhood and community for almost 17 years. Edmonton Strathcona is a diverse constituency, defined by an unparalleled level of connection between its residents that plays out every day at festivals, independent small businesses of all types, theatres, schools, playgrounds, parks, trails, and community leagues. To all of my constituents, thank you for putting your trust in me over these many years, and thank you for your support, advice and engagement along the way. To the staff and volunteers who worked beside me to make life better for Albertans, your work contributed to doing just that, in so many ways. To my fellow caucus members, you’re a dedicated, caring and fun team. I’m going to miss you, but mostly I can’t wait for you to form government so you can get to work building a better future for all Albertans. Finally, to my family, thank you again for supporting it all. See you on the trails!

While the UCP refuses to increase the minimum wage, cap auto insurance, cap electricity costs, or cap rent increases, they give themselves a bump to their living allowance. That's another $270/month in their pockets a retroactive bonus of nearly $2000. Yay for them! #ableg

For the record, all NDP MLAs voted against it. Remind your friends and family which party is actually on your side.

On the doors this week folks have told me their top concerns are access to health care and affordability. If the UCP won't deliver on those things- maybe they could at least laminate healthcare cards? Asking for a province. #ableg #abpoli

We have been in session for two weeks. Here’s a short list on some of the legislation that is priority for the UCP: 1) dog whistling about “rights” - amendments that accomplish little except faking that anti-vaxxers were “discriminated against” (they were not) #AbLeg

This is all on the provincial UCP government. Not our municipalities, not the federal government. Stop blaming others and help do the work that needs to be done here. #ableg
Every Albertan deserves to feel safe & welcome in their community. After 5 years under the UCP, they don’t. Albertans want their gov’t to take action on crime & the root cause of crime. But UCP are just making things worse. We’re ready to help make things better. #ableg

The UCP likes to blame other levels of government for issues around public safety but a lot of it falls directly at their feet. #ableg

Yesterday Alberta’s NDP Opposition broke with convention to emphatically vote no at first reading of three historically cruel cynical and bullying pieces of legislation - all three of which breach Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The SCS decision is back to you, Minister, as it’s always been. But don’t take their vote as a sign they don’t care what happens next. #yyc ableg

If we want to address public safety and saving lives, let’s talk about how we can enhance things and offer support to Calgary to do so. Closing the supervised consumption site would have achieved the opposite effect.

Today, @JanisIrwin was absolutely on fire with her member statement calling on Premier Danielle Smith to live up to the values she once espoused on protecting trans youth. Well, worth a listen! #abpoli #ableg #cdnpoli

Had to do a bit of fact-checking on Don Braid's weekend column. If our news media can't, or isn't willing to, provide accurate information about important topics, how can we expect the public to make good educated opinions on them? #ableg #yyc
