Sobering to think of the possibility that we might one day be grateful that these early waves were scrimmage matches that gave us time to tool-up, should a future variant have mortality rates on par with say SARS1 (10%).
Replying to @tmprowell
So when I tell you we are lucky that Mother Nature gave us a practice virus to learn on with all of the #CovidVariants to date, listen to me. We have to stay humble & recognize that if we abandon masks now, we are giving this virus a mindboggling # of chances to mutate. /18

It’s the end of the beginning for #SyntheticBiology. This pic of a grey-haired 🤭 @DrewEndy wearing an @iGEM 2006 shirt looking at $DNA banner did it for me. Proud @Ginkgo sent up a flare, but we are a big community in #synbio and the world is about to take notice. We’re ready.🧵

It's long past time to get rid of policies that block researchers' efforts to engage, respect, & honor the civil rights of research volunteers. A rather egregious example is a PDF that appeared on @CMSgov website in '14 @geochurch & I explain @statnews 1/n statnews.com/2020/06/29/unsi…

So, back to this PDF. We are fortunate that legal scholars, Barbara Evans and Susan Wolf, devoted an entire legal review to assess its legal standing. TLDR; questionable, at best. floridalawreview.com/2020/a-… But, that hasn't stopped the chilling effect it has had on researchers. 6/n

w/ @MichelleNMeyer, we wrote a forum commentary unpacking key take-home messages for researchers that seek to both advance scientific discovery & explore alternative models of governance that engage, respect, & honor the civil rights of volunteers. floridalawreview.com/2020/pr… /end

The Lyme rash (erythema migrans) on skin of color is difficult to find in dermatological references and I'm asked often to provide some, so I was delighted to receive this (I'm assured the young man pictured made a full recovery). #MedTwitter #dermtwitter #LymeDisease #BLM

🚨I wrote about COVID-19 long-haulers—the thousands of people who’ve been struggling with *months* of debilitating symptoms. Many have faced disbelief from friends and medical professionals because they don’t fit the typical profile of the disease. 1/ theatlantic.com/health/archi…
