When I was inducted as
@CMA_Docs' first Indigenous President, my mom reminded me that I needed to “own my power” and embrace the belief that I could help make health systems better. I had a responsibility to the people who’d cleared the path before me to live up to their expectations.
The CMA’s recent announcement of an apology process, focused on the harm the health care system has caused Indigenous Peoples, is a needed step on the path of reconciliation.
Today, on Indigenous People’s Day, I want to recognize the importance of this apology process, and celebrate those who have worked tirelessly to lay a path to today. Our next steps will be heavy. The harm to Indigenous patients, families and communities is real. Together we can bear the weight of each step, remembering that the progress we make is achieved together.
