I am 1/4 Ukrainian. Here’s a story relevant to today’s disaster. In 1976 I traveled to Moscow in a 6-person U.S. delegation to an ocean science conference, 1 of the early ‘safe exchanges’ (athletes & scientists) in the thaw of in relations between the U.S. & the USSR.

Wait for it... The potentially historic winter storm about to pummel the east coast of North America will explosively intensify under the jet stream in the next few hours. Weaker remnants of the storm will then make their way to Europe, mainly in the form of rain and wind.

Every climate scientist and environmental journalist should make a decision. Is our role merely to document the unfolding tragedy, with sighs and groans about the follies of humankind? Or also to seek to stop the greatest catastrophe humanity has ever faced? I say the latter.

Friends, I do not have the capacity to describe the sorrow of what we are seeing and not seeing here at the Bear River Bird Refuge. There is no water — no birds — and no wetlands that sparkle sing. Only a dry, silent marsh — in a parched landscape w/ a dwindling Great Salt Lake
