As of March 29, 1.45 million high school seniors submitted Free App for Federal Student Aid. That's about 540,000 fewer than a year ago. That's down 27 percent. Very, very worrisome.

As part of Common App’s Next Chapter, we are aiming to bring more low-and middle-income students onto the app. We’re happy to see that the growth in applicants from below median income communities continued to outpace their peers at 14% since 2022–23 (versus 5%). 5/

Applications to public members (14%) grew more than those to private members since 2022–23 (10%). Growth in applications since 2019–20 was slowest for the most selective institutions (admit rates below 25%) and highest for less selective institutions (admit rates >= 75%). 7/

As we continue to monitor trends following the SCOTUS ruling on race-conscious admissions, applicants identifying as URM increased by 15% in 2023–24, driven largely by growth in applicants identifying as Black or African American (15%) and Latinx (15%). 3/
