Delighted to announce the launch of @ecfr's New Politics Project.
Led by me in Berlin & @PiotrBuras1 in Warsaw, it will 1) research how volatility, fragmentation & populism are reshaping European foreign policies, 2) build a resilient agenda for a stronger, autonomous Europe.
Fossil vs electric is a conflict--even if the lines between the two camps are blurry, as they are with capital vs labor. Communication and compromise can only partially resolve it.
Clear thinking from @JeremyCliffe, @sd270, and @PiotrBuras1
The #EuropeanGreenDeal has become a proxy war for a much bigger political battle.
#Climatepolicy is increasingly shaped not by class, but by identity, culture and belonging.
In a new policy brief, @PiotrBuras1, @JeremyCliffe and @sd270 explore what this means for the future of the European Green Deal—and why making the #greentransition durable requires a new political coalition.

Being left home alone might be scary-but it can also give us a space to become more self-confident about our abilities and more independent.
Enjoyed working w/ Pawel Zerka on this @ecfr report & discovering how Europeans are often ahead of their own leaders. @ECFREuropeanSec
📍New public opinion polling
Like little Kevin in the comedy film, European citizens have woken up to an uncomfortable truth: they've been left Home Alone. Not by their parents and siblings, but by an America on whom many thought they could depend, write @j_kobzova and Pawel Zerka

✍️New policy brief
As climate policy becomes increasingly contested, Europe must adapt its Green Deal to a new political era and make the green transition more durable, popular and politically resilient, argue @PiotrBuras1, @JeremyCliffe, and @sd270 👇

Russia’s all-out invasion of Ukraine in 2022 exposed a structural weakness in Europe’s energy system: its deep dependence on fossil fuel imports.
Despite several attempts to build energy diplomacy with alternative partners, the EU remains heavily reliant on fossil fuels, which meet nearly 60% of the bloc’s energy demand.
ECFR's new policy brief by @szymonkardas identifies ways the EU and member states can work more closely together, specialise and divide up tasks for mutual benefit and complete the final phasing out of Russian fossil fuels.

NEW 🚨
US MOVING MORE ASSETS OUT OF EUROPE.
A military source close to the matter tells me the US has briefed European allies that it will reduce its force posture in Europe by 50% when it comes to deep strike capabilities.
This includes aircraft carriers and jets.
The US said it expects European allies to make up that gap and present their plans to do so before the Ankara summit.
Allies took note and SACEUR will come up with a plan for Europe to replace the outgoing capabilities though we don’t expect it will be like for like. The announcement was made at a meeting held at NATO HQ on Friday where Alexander Velez-Green, Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary of War for Policy briefed European allies. I understand that US assets taken from Europe will be moved to the Middle East and Pacific regions.
Separately a NATO diplomat told me that the US has long warned it would shift assets away from Europe and this could represent an opportunity for European allies to step up and maximise their capabilities in Europe to better calibrate deterrence against Russia while reducing reliance on the US.

Brexit has certainly harmed the UK, but any "Rejoin" effort would have to reckon seriously with the manifold ways in which the EU has changed in the decade since the 2016 referendum. My comment in today's @ObserverUK ⬇️
