Tolkien can be, to modern readers, and among many other things, a first step down a road that leads to a vast landscape of stunning (and largely forgotten) literature, from BEOWULF to GAWAIN (and other Arthuriana) to the EDDA. Even on to the adventure tales of Buchan and Haggard, without whom my beloved Indy wouldn't exist.
Once you set foot on that path of reading, who knows where you'll be swept off to?
The irony of Tolkien's harshest critics is they are among those most attached to literary criticism, highbrow lit, etc. If such pursuits have a future in a world of dying humanities, it will be secured in large part by Tolkien's own popularity.
