This has been what I've been working on for nearly a year now, super excited to finally do the first release of Automatic Tracing. Starting today anyone with Observability enabled will automatically get traces generated for their Workers that are present in the Cloudflare dashboard and can be sent to third party observability providers. We've had internal teams and select customers using this for a while and they've been able to make good performance gains through the increased understanding of what's happening in their Worker. But, today's release is only the first of many. There are several things that we didn't have time to include in this first release like context propagation for distributed tracing, user-created spans, even span events, or even some CF bindings we didn't get to instrument. All of these gaps are on the tracing roadmap and will be released as they're ready, but in the meantime there's still a lot of useful data for those that have Workers in production.

Listen, I'm all in for the messaging/strategy biopsy. Need to build a bigger tent; use economic populism as the tentpole; be less judgmental and exclusionary. But folks, he might not be lying about the round ups and political prosecutions. Job one is to get ready for that.

I'm finally trying to use an AI code assistant in anger (Cursor), and... I'm a little underwhelmed after all the hype? But I also suspect I might be "doing it wrong" Now soliciting guides / opinions on how to best use Cursor / Copilot / Zed AI

Yes. You will not get cheap nuclear reactors (or fusion reactors, for that matter) unless you build the same design over and over again. By @jlkzrck

"Almost every reactor has been a special snowflake." DOE official on our nuclear call today. She reminded us that 50 "first of a kind" projects have robbed us of lower nuclear costs. We have to change our approach.

We're reaching the inflection point.
The Economist on exponential #solar growth 📈: "The next ten-fold increase [in solar] will be equivalent to multiplying the world’s entire fleet of nuclear reactors by eight in less than the time it typically takes to build just a single one of them"🤯economist.com/leaders/2024/0…

I had convinved myself that disaggregated storage is the way to go for OLTP, but now i am starting to convince myself that ”diskless” (object storage as the primary storage) is where disaggregated storage converges to (on cloud anyway). All we need is little bit cheaper writes on AWS S3 and others…

Kyle Kingsbury (Jepsen) teaches a distributed systems course. I'm going to put this on my same list of "probably the best possible use of corporate budget" as David Beazley's Raft course. He's got new slots opening up for a mid-December course now.

Databases building on top of object storage feels like the future. I'm excited to see where SlateDB goes!
At #P99CONF, @criccomini introduced #SlateDB, an #opensource #cloudnative key-value Database built to run on top of cloud object storage (S3, etc.). Like Confluent's #WarpStream, this #Rustlang-based storage engine is run on a #ZeroDisk architecture.

Reading about how @cloudflare built v2 of Queues on top of Durable Objects (aka Actors) composed together continues to reenforce that I don't yet have a grasp on how to architect systems using actors 🤯 blog.cloudflare.com/how-we-b…

I regret to inform you that reading about how Workflows are implemented has only made this worse 🤯 I'll need to build some stuff on top of this abstraction to figure it out. blog.cloudflare.com/building…
