JPAC is now JEWISH CALIFORNIA – Our Voice in Sacramento. For more than 50 years, we’ve brought Jewish community institutions together to advocate statewide for safety, dignity, and shared values. As antisemitism and hate rise, Jewish organizations face increased threats, and the services that support our most vulnerable neighbors are increasingly at risk. In this moment, clarity about who we are and how we show up has never mattered more. JEWISH CALIFORNIA reflects who we are today: the nation’s largest statewide coalition of Jewish organizations, speaking with one unified voice. We’re proud to enter this next chapter. Jews are more than a religion. We're also a people, with a shared history, culture, heritage, and identity. On Tuesday, California's Assembly Judiciary Committee unanimously passed SB 1387, which would ensure Jewish identity can be included when the state collects ethnicity data. The bill does not create a protected class or require anyone to identify as Jewish. Instead, it gives Californians the option to more accurately reflect their identity and helps ensure Jewish communities are better represented in data on issues such as hate crimes, education, and healthcare. Thank you to Assemblymembers @AsmRickZbur (coauthor) and @AsmStefani for speaking in support of SB 1387, Senator @SenHenryStern for authoring the bill, and the Committee for passing it.

Following the antisemitic and hate-riddled candidate statement in the California voter guide, Jewish California and our partners traveled to Sacramento to meet with Secretary of State Shirley Weber. We shared the impact this had on our community and discussed strategies to prevent it from happening again. We also met with Assemblymember Pellerin, who is working on legislation to ensure this kind of content never appears in official election materials again. We look forward to working with Assemblymember Pellerin and Secretary Weber on this important effort. Stay tuned for updates.

AB 2664 – our bill to establish Safe Worship Zones (Bubble Zones) at houses of worship – just passed out of the Assembly with a 48-0 vote! Special thanks to Assemblymember @BauerKahan for authoring this critical bill to protect our institutions. The bill now heads to the Senate! NOTE: The final vote count may still change. The remaining 32 Assemblymembers who abstained can add their votes before the Assembly gavels to a close later tonight.

At a @Jewish_Cal virtual forum Sunday, five candidates for state superintendent staked out positions on AB 715, the safety of Jewish students in public schools, and a proposal that would strip the very office they’re running for of its independence. Read more at @jewishsf: tinyurl.com/2ja9y4s3

We are horrified and heartbroken by today's deadly attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Three innocent people were murdered while gathered in a place of worship. Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and the entire San Diego Muslim community. Houses of worship must be sacred, protected spaces for people of every faith. When one community is targeted for how they pray, all of us are diminished. Our Jewish community knows this experience all too well. We stand in unwavering solidarity with our Muslim neighbors across California and reaffirm that hatred and violence have no place in our state. We recommit ourselves to working with California's leaders to enact policies and direct resources that ensure every faith community can worship and gather free from fear.

Who will be the next leader of California’s public schools? Last night, we joined our partners at @jpaccalifornia to host the five candidates for California State Superintendent of Public Instruction for a powerful conversation on the issues impacting the Jewish community most, including AB 715 implementation and rising antisemitism on college campuses. Thank you to our fellow sponsors @adlcalifornia, @ajcnorcal, @jfcsorg, @jewishbayarea, and @jfedla for helping make this important forum possible. Missed it? “No student should have to become a civil rights expert to fight their own discrimination.” @ADL chair board member Nicole Mutchnik was at @JPACcalifornia’s Capitol Summit in Sacramento this week to meet with lawmakers and Jewish leaders and advocate for real action, including AB 2664, which would create a buffer zone to protect congregants entering and leaving their houses of worship. The Jewish community is under attack, and staying silent is not an option.

I had a wonderful time at the @JPACcalifornia summit, educating legislators on important bills to the Jewish community (creating buffer zones outside of houses of worship, making “Jewish” an ethnicity on state forms, expanding the nonprofit security grant). I have never been someone to sit by and watch from the sidelines when things are happening to my community; I take real action. I’m part of a beautiful young leadership program with the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles, where I can become more involved in civic life and make things better for my community. At this summit, I also heard from inspiring speakers and leaders from the Jewish organizations in California. Yes, this state has its problems, yes, antisemitism happens here, but I am hopeful for the future, and you can bet I’m doing my part to actively make it better.
