Jews are more than a religion. We're also a people, with a shared history, culture, heritage, and identity. On Tuesday, California's Assembly Judiciary Committee unanimously passed SB 1387, which would ensure Jewish identity can be included when the state collects ethnicity data. The bill does not create a protected class or require anyone to identify as Jewish. Instead, it gives Californians the option to more accurately reflect their identity and helps ensure Jewish communities are better represented in data on issues such as hate crimes, education, and healthcare. Thank you to Assemblymembers @AsmRickZbur (coauthor) and @AsmStefani for speaking in support of SB 1387, Senator @SenHenryStern for authoring the bill, and the Committee for passing it.

On Tuesday, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors presented JCRC with a Jewish American Heritage Month proclamation recognizing the Jewish community's contributions to our region. The proclamation was presented in June so the Board could do so in person. Thank you to Supervisors @Lisa4Supervisor and @RepSpeier for making it happen. As Supervisor Gauthier shared: "Here in the Bay Area, the JCRC plays a vital role in advancing civil rights, combatting antisemitism and building bridges across diverse communities. Your leadership ensures that San Mateo County remains a place where all people feel safe, valued and included."

Yesterday, the California State Assembly adjourned in honor of our former Executive Director, Rita Semel, who passed away on May 13 at the age of 104. We are deeply grateful to Assemblymember @Stefani4CA for recognizing Rita’s extraordinary legacy and the profound impact she had across California. Throughout her remarkable life, Rita dedicated herself to building bridges among faiths, cultures, and communities. Her influence extended far beyond the Jewish community, touching countless lives throughout the Bay Area and beyond. An exceptional leader and visionary, Rita founded and served on the boards of numerous community organizations, including the San Francisco Interfaith Council, helping to strengthen our region and advance a more connected and compassionate world. Rita’s legacy lives on in the institutions she strengthened, the relationships she nurtured, and the countless lives she touched. Her extraordinary example will continue to guide and inspire our interfaith and communal work for years to come as we strive to build upon her decades of tireless good works and compassionate leadership. May her memory be for a blessing.

HUGE NEWS: Antisemitic Richmond, CA Mayor Eduardo Martinez has LOST his reelection bid! Earlier this year, Richmond made international headlines after Mayor Martinez repeatedly shared antisemitic conspiracy theories on social media. Despite widespread condemnation, including calls for his resignation from more than 80 current and former Bay Area elected officials, he refused to take responsibility and continued his reelection campaign. This week, Richmond voters sent a clear message: antisemitism has no place in public office. This result is a victory for everyone who stood with the Jewish community in confronting antisemitism and demanding accountability. We are grateful to the thousands of community members, allies, and elected leaders who spoke out and refused to stay silent. While this election marks an important moment, the work continues. JCRC remains committed to combating antisemitism and advancing a Bay Area where all communities can thrive.

Thank you Secretary of State @DrWeber4CA for meeting with JCRC and Jewish leaders from around California.
Following the antisemitic and hate-riddled candidate statement in the California voter guide, Jewish California and our partners traveled to Sacramento to meet with Secretary of State Shirley Weber. We shared the impact this had on our community and discussed strategies to prevent it from happening again. We also met with Assemblymember Pellerin, who is working on legislation to ensure this kind of content never appears in official election materials again. We look forward to working with Assemblymember Pellerin and Secretary Weber on this important effort. Stay tuned for updates.

This historic opportunity is the result of years of advocacy and thousands of messages from community members like you. But the budget is still being negotiated, and we need your voice now. 👉 TAKE 1 MIN TO CONTACT YOUR SENATOR: tinyurl.com/AnnualSecurityFu…
