Scott Adams never lost the ability to surprise me with his ideas and observations. He could comment on the same event or situation everyone else was looking at and reveal a new angle or a whole new world. My brain grew every time I heard his voice. What a loss. What a figure.

Diablo 2 had a terrible code base. It was full of bugs, thousands of them. The Horadric Cube? One giant if-then-else statement. The post-mortem code review was 20 pages long and scathing. It's worth Billions today. Maybe it doesn't matter if vibe-coding produces crap code.

Lately, I've gain a ton of respect for vibe-coders. We are here on our high horses, telling them how their code is shit and how models can't fix their messes, but they just don't care. Many of these folks are simply optimizing for a different outcome. For them, code is just a means to an end. They don't care about maintainability, elegance, or correctness because they aren't planning to touch the code. They care about shipping their idea before they forget. Do you know how many ideas I've had that I've never executed on because I didn't have the time or was too lazy to get off my couch? I can learn a thing or two from people willing to make things happen, even when so many aristocrats tell them they shouldn't.

Unfortunately have had multiple family members with ICU stays and emergency surgeries. The unsolicited advice I give every family going through something similar is to NEVER PAY THE 1st BILL. This is because many billers send you and insurance a copy a few times just to see if one (or both pay). Wait till all the bills come in. Anesthesia and labs are usually last. After you get the second or third notice, call your insurance company and ask them what you need to pay and then call the hospitals and negotiate the balance and provide dates the insurance already paid them. Then you have to go back and do the same to insurance to prove you already met your out of pocket and now the rest is on them. Absolutely no one is doing their job. They have no incentive to do so. You have to do it for them and be ā€œthat personā€ It infuriates me that families facing tragedies have to manage all this on top of fighting for their lives and work and managing a family. It’s just cruel.

My wife is the one who stays on top of health insurance paperwork / billing. *Multiple* times this year we’ve gotten bills and followed up 1-2mos later to discover they were just…never sent to our insurance, resulting in hundreds of $$ reductions. It shouldn’t be this way, but if you have traditional insurance, *please* pay close attention to the letters / online portal to note what was processed through insurance and what hasn’t been. There will likely be no rhyme or reason to it, it may simply have depended on whether a random employee did their job or not.

More energy today. Soar from racing the kids up and down the street on their scooters. Workouts have been practically nonexistent, and sleep has been a challenge since the newborn stage. A good reminder to incorporate some exercise - get creative if you have to.

I know not everyone will have time to do a reread of book #1 before The Strength of the Few releases (3.5 weeks to go!!), so for those interested, here's the link to an ā€˜interlude’ I wrote - a bonus chapter that serves as a recap for The Will of the Many: bit.ly/ConfessionesAdMortuos

I have a story that I think hits to the center of this. I worked for ESPN for two months as a temporary PA (left to start my writing career) roughly 11 years ago. During the interview process, I was asked by a decision maker at the company what I would change about ESPN. I told him I would want more highlights and more focus on games. He told me I was wrong and that fans don’t care about games once they go final, they only care about storylines. I told him that storylines need the context of games (or highlights of them on sportscenter!) and he told me, again, I was wrong. I think they’ve continued to lose touch with what makes sports fans, sports fans
