Excited to share our preprint, reviving @kristyredhorse's interest in the placenta from her PhD ~20 years ago! We find using 3D imaging that the mouse placenta is far more invasive than previously thought. Furthermore, we find a surprise from our favorite chemokine CXCL12...🧵:
3D imaging of the pregnant uterus reveals an extensively invasive mouse placenta requiring CXCL12-CXCR4 signaling biorxiv.org/content/10.64898… #biorxiv_devbio

🚨 BIG NEWS: The era of in vitro human embryo implantation has arrived! 🧬 We have successfully modeled the earliest stages of pregnancy in the lab using a new 3D "organoid uterus" platform. Published today in @CellCellPress: doi.org/10.1016/j.cell.2025.…

Leverage on our human blastoid model we now establish a 3D in vitro model for studying human implantation and implantation failure: Cell cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092… Congrats to all co-authors and collaborators, especially Hongmei Wang @CAS! So proud of my former trainees Leqian Yu and Yulei Wei who have made this finally happen in their own labs! This project started shortly after we published the first human blastoid model based on naive human pluripotent stem cells and it took several years of trial and errors with different strategies. I am happy to see now it has been successfully applied to study mechanisms underlying human implantation and implantation failure. More importantly our model helps screen FDA approved compounds that hold the potential to overcome repeated implantation failure.

Despite high cell numbers and long lifespans, large animals don’t have higher cancer rates: Peto’s paradox. Elephants carry extra copies of tumor suppressor genes, while whales enhance DNA repair mechanisms! Fascinating that nature found different solutions to the same problem
