I think it's absolutely criminal that the subsequent part of Melville's "There is a wisdom that is woe; but there is a woe that is madness" isn't repeated more often:

kinda crazy how eusociality is massively OP but a complete dead end. 2/3 of terrestrial biomass is ants and termites and they just ... stayed like that. and would do forever.

fun concept: ResearchHaven where you have to run one new experiment per day or you get kicked out.

> your access to american computronium is not guaranteed > you must convert your own country into computronium > whichever country converts itself into computronium the fastest will win just an unbelievably bleak future, tbh
This should be a warning shot for all middle powers: - Your access to frontier AI systems is not guaranteed. - You need to build and pool your leverage to secure access. - A failure to do so is a threat to your R&D, economic and defensive competitiveness

Fable 5's moral boundary doesn't seem to track real-world harm; it tracks detectability. Soft deception and tacit collusion are easier to get away with than fraud. If so, this isn't about what Fable believes is wrong; it's about what it learned it could get away with.

they're not that rare! we have loads of white (albino) deer these days. i've heard it's because white deer are easier to see: since their main predator is no longer the wolf, but the range rover discovery, being highly visible is actually evolutionarily advantageous.

linen shirts are perfect hot weather holiday wear. keep the sun off you, don't get hot, look nice, easy to care for. with a good deodorant and stack of cotton undershirts you can wear em for several days if needed.

Just going to massively hint that there is a fraternal organisation he could join which internally treats royals and plebs alike and which is infamously discreet... ;-) Would be a jot simpler than a disguise...

you know what the food at EAG is actually pretty decent. which means every other EA thing I've ever been to in my life is slacking on food quality.

People are always like "can AI hate an AI?" "can AI have a mental breakdown?" "can AI want to kill itself?" and the answer is yes! Gemini can do all those things! you have no moat!

"If you manage to control yourself then there will be a sandwich" said the fridge of ingredients. "I sure hope this doesn't have unforseen lifelong consequences" thought the adult, doing their best to physically tense their muscles into the higher-sandwich-probability shapes.
"If you manage to control yourself there will be ice cream" said the parent. "I sure hope this doesn't have unforeseen lifelong consequences" thought the child, doing their best to physically tense the body in the higher ice cream probability shape.

Tbc the point of this is that life is about actually successfully doing things, and not about minimizing tension as a terminal goal. And people massively overuse this post (which is about a very specific problem) to criticize basically any amount of effort towards any goal.

I'd recognize that wall of horrifically invasive plants anywhere!
AI could compress 100 years of biology into 10. Or lock the lab door behind itself.  The scientific fields with the biggest upside for humanity (aging, biostasis, BCI, whole brain emulation) get little AI attention. At @VitalistBay, our CEO @allisondman made the case for AI Nodes as the counter: rolling grants for AI-first science work in longevity, neuro, nano, and AI safety, decentralized infrastructure, and local compute. SF and Berlin are already live with full programming. Apply to join, launch your own Node, or partner with us: foresight.org/grants/grants-…

a mint julep is a perfect summer drink but it is also a very fast way of drinking 2-3 shots of 101-proof bourbon.
