Understanding how the brain works requires knowing how its 86 billion neurons are connected. For the first time, we have a technology capable of doing this at scale. Tomorrow, @BobbyKasthuri joins our seminar group to present NeuroPEEM: a new approach to electron microscopy that images brain tissue 300x faster and cheaper than existing methods. June 12, 10 am PST. Request to join: luma.com/npagul9u

"As far as conferences go, this is about as long-horizon as conversations get." @GeorgePatin's reflections from Vision Weekend UK on AI as meta-technology, funding the frontier, and what comes next: meridian22.substack.com/p/di…

It was great to have João as part of our #LifeUnlimited track with @foresightinst , talking about how new technologies can help overcome longstanding biological limits. We're looking forward to seeing what comes next!
There is no future for anyone currently reading this if we don’t solve aging. Awesome Vision Weekend in London from @foresightinst discussing what the future may look like and the technologies shaping it.

Last but not least at Vision Weekend UK: our $10K pitch contest. One minute, no slides. Ideas pitched from stage at Bankside London: dream decoding, crowdsourcing consciousness, treating arthritis as an aging-driven disease, downloading new functions into our cells, and a Socratic model for science funding. The winning pitch was made by @yasmeenbrain on bioengineered athletic performance. Big congratulations!

Highlights from the Existential Hope track at @foresightinst's Vision Weekend UK: Anders Sandberg (@anderssandberg): Building a Dyson sphere by 2027 might sound like a crazy Twitter idea, until you do the math and figure out how to achieve something like that. Leah Morris: How we can bridge the gap between the discovery and the real-world impact of a new technology by building infrastructure that helps scale progress. Christine Peterson (@lifeext): 40 years ago, we had no internet; today we have deep learning; 40 years from now, we might have artificial superintelligence and whole-brain emulations. Zoe Brammer and Ankur Vora: Predicting the future of AI is hard, but they polled us on when we think we'll have a conscious AI companion and an international treaty on AI. Jonah Weinbaum (@WeinbaumJonah): A roadmap for building the future we want: find new ideas, research how to prioritize them, head hunt for talent to work on them, and connect talent to funders.

Holding @foresightinst Vision Weekend UK in The Barbican yesterday was inspired. It is 70's futurism as its best - brutalism that actually turns solarpunk.

“Durable innovation compounds into public good in the institutions at the edges: between public and private, between disciplines, between the lab and the people. We systematically underfund this critical connective tissue.” — Dorothy Chou (Google DeepMind), in the Funding X track at Vision Weekend UK.

How do funding institutions navigate around the scar tissue of past failures, without losing the lessons buried in them? A question asked at our Pathways to Implementation track at Vision Weekend UK. Answers from the fireside chat:

“In the craft world or the culinary world, we have elaborate apprenticeship systems. To become a Michelin star chef, you work your way up by doing the work. We don’t have the same in our funding institutions, and we should.” — @jncstrd, SPRIND
