10 years ago my wife, the mum of our kids & the MP for Batley&Spen was killed by a far right extremist. At anniversaries I try to be optimistic about the future. But not this time. In the ten years since she was killed we have gone backwards & I fear our democracy is now at risk

RIP Roy Hattersley. Two small oil studies I made of him during a sitting at the Reform Club in 2015. On finding out I was a Blade he said to me, as a dedicated Sheffield Wednesday supporter, "well if I'd known that, Ben, I wouldn't have bloody well turned up!"

Very sad. Labour through and through, a fine mind and gifted writer, a loyal and hard working deputy to Neil at a vital time in Labour history, and a critical friend to New Labour. Sheffield Wednesday to the very end! RIP Roy
Roy Hattersley, former Deputy Leader of Labour, has died aged 93, a close friend of the family tells The New World. Hattersley was a major figure in UK politics for decades. Article (free to read) below.

Here’s a spot of good news: in a survey of 125,000 kids aged 8 to 18 in 479 UK schools, 36.1% say they like reading in their spare time — up from 32.7% last year. According to the National Literacy Trust, 20.3% say they read every day. Last year’s figure was 18.7%.

She fled her home. She saved her nurse’s uniform. Not her jewellery. Not possessions. Her uniform because she wanted to keep caring for people. That tells you everything about her. This is the Britain I believe in: one that values compassion, courage and those who contribute to our communities.
This is possibly the saddest thing I've seen in a long time..an immigrant nurse talking about fleeing her home..she saved her UNIFORM. So she could still WORK for our communities. I'd fill this country with a thousand of this woman than one of those good for nothing thugs. God help this poor woman.

Family of the N Ireland stabbed man say many migrants make valuable contributions to the UK, condemn disorder and don't want to divide people or fuel violence. And again Hard and Far Right extremists like Musk, Yaxley-Lennon, Farage and Lowe fan flames. theguardian.com/uk-news/2026…

Breaking: Keir Starmer accuses JD Vance of interfering in British democracy and attempting to stir up unrest on British streets This is the strongest condemnation yet by Starmer of the Trump administration Number 10 says: “In recent days we have seen people trying to interfere in our democracy and seeking to stir up division on our streets. “The Nowak family are grieving after Henry’s horrific murder. They have said they do not want his death to be used to create further division, hatred or tension. We should be respecting their wishes. “Our politics should bring people together even in the most terrible of circumstances. That is who we are as a country.”

BREAKING 🚨| The number of people in a union in the UK has GROWN by 192,000 - to 6.6 million. There has never been a more important time to be a member of a union. When unions do well, working people do well. It pays to be in a union.

If this is all true, then Robert Kenyon, the Reform candidate in Makerfield, in clearly bonkers & deeply unpleasant, and it's no wonder he was Facebook friends with the self-declared fascist Gary Raikes. Reform's vetting processes seem about as effective as a chocolate teapot.
EXCLUSIVE: Reform UK’s Makerfield by-election candidate, Rob Kenyon, had a SECOND deleted social media account, and the archived posts are damning. hopenothate.org.uk/2026/05/2…

Agree
The captain of Tottenham Hotspur choosing to personally miss the club’s biggest-ever league match in our recent modern history. Romero should never be allowed to put on a Spurs shirt ever again. Damning indictment of a culture which has been allowed to manifest inside our club.

Yes, the Ben-Gvir video is disgraceful. But that's not the issue. The (obvious) issue is that if that's how nonviolent European protesters are treated in public, any person with a brain can imagine how Palestinians are treated behind closed doors. *That* is the real scandal.

The abominable treatment of civilians aboard the flotilla, including that which is documented in footage shared by Itamar Ben-Gvir, is unacceptable. Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs has directed officials to summon the Israeli ambassador to demand assurances regarding the safety and security of Canadians involved. Canada has already imposed strict sanctions on Mr. Ben-Gvir, including asset freezes and a travel ban, in response to his repeated incitement of violence. The protection of civilians and respect for human dignity must be upheld everywhere, at all times.

I am truly appalled at the video posted by Israeli Cabinet Minister Ben-Gvir taunting those involved in the Global Sumud Flotilla. This violates the most basic standards of respect and dignity in the way people should be treated. We are in touch with the families of a number of British nationals involved to provide them with consular support. We have demanded an explanation from the Israeli authorities and made clear their obligations to protect the rights of our citizens and all those involved.

This year marks 90 years since legendary Spurs manager Bill Nicholson joined the club as a ground staff boy. To honour his legacy, a blue plaque will be installed on the house where he grew up in Scarborough. We’re proud to back the campaign and help raise funds for the plaque ahead of its unveiling in July. Please support & donate here: buff.ly/A6JfEze
