Police K-9s put themselves in harm’s way to protect our officers and our communities. This week, our office announced federal charges against a convicted felon accused of possessing a firearm and shooting Fort Lauderdale Police Department K-9 Appie during a pursuit. I’m grateful for Appie’s service and for the courage and professionalism of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, ATF, and all of our law enforcement partners who work every day to keep South Florida safe. As always, an indictment is merely an allegation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
