Last Friday, I joined the South Florida Chapter of the Federal Bar Association for an intimate boardroom discussion about the transformation underway at the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
We discussed the cultural, structural, and directional changes we have made to strengthen the Office and improve how we fight crime, from robust hiring and rebuilding our workforce to leading the nation in major white-collar cases, narcotics prosecutions, and bringing historic cases forward.
Our goal is simple: build the most effective U.S. Attorney’s Office in the country and deliver results for South Floridans.

#SOUTHCOM Commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan met with Army Corps General, Gen. Roberto Legrá Sotolongo, First Deputy Minister of the Chief of the General Staff, and other senior leaders from the Cuban military today at the perimeter of Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for a brief exchange on operational security matters. Gen. Donovan also led a perimeter security assessment of the naval base and discussed force protection, safety of service members and their families, and operational readiness with base officials.

This week I had the opportunity to meet Fort Lauderdale Police K-9 Appie and his partner, Officer Guzman, following Appie’s recovery from injuries sustained while assisting officers in the apprehension of an armed felon after a home invasion.
Appie was shot in the chest in the line of duty and survived. His courage, determination, and service are a reminder that our K-9 officers willingly face the same dangers as their human partners to keep our communities safe.
We are grateful for Appie’s service and wish him continued strength in his recovery. 🐾🇺🇸
A convicted felon allegedly chose to arm himself, flee from law enforcement, and shoot a police K-9—now facing serious federal charges. Attacks on law enforcement officers and K-9s will be met with aggressive prosecution. Illegal firearm possession and violent resistance only add years of consequences. Accountability follows.

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our country.
After more than 20 years in uniform, I have seen firsthand the quiet courage, discipline, and sense of duty that define our military. Behind every name etched on a memorial is a family that carries that loss forever. Today, we honor not only the fallen, but also the loved ones they left behind.
The freedoms we enjoy and the rule of law we defend every day were secured at an extraordinary cost. Memorial Day is a reminder that service to this country is not abstract. It is personal. It is sacrificial. And it deserves our gratitude and remembrance.
God bless our fallen heroes and the United States of America. 🇺🇸

This case also reflects something I’m especially proud of inside @USAO_SDFL: two units we built from the ground up working together exactly as intended — our Border & Immigration Crimes Enforcement (BICE) Section and our Cyber Fraud Unit.
Modern criminal networks do not operate in silos. Immigration crime, transnational fraud, identity theft, cybercrime, financial laundering, and cartel activity increasingly overlap. We created these units to break down those barriers and bring specialized prosecutors together to attack these threats from every angle.
That collaboration is already producing real results for the people of South Florida and victims across the country.
Prosecutors charged a Canadian national living illegally in the U.S. and an alleged co-conspirator in a $13 million cryptocurrency fraud scheme, accusing them of using deception and digital assets to steal from victims and launder proceeds. The case underscores that crypto crimes are traceable, international cooperation is increasing, and law enforcement is aggressively targeting fraud schemes that exploit online anonymity. Fraud in the digital economy is not “untraceable” — and those behind it are being identified, charged, and prosecuted.

Yesterday we unveiled the Ariana Fajardo Orshan Mock Courtroom & Training Center at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Miami.
Ariana had the vision for this training courtroom and helped make it a reality. Naming it in her honor is a fitting tribute to her leadership, service, and lasting impact on this Office.
I had the privilege of serving as a line prosecutor under her leadership and later serving with her on the bench. Today, she continues to lead as Chief Judge of Florida’s Eleventh Judicial Circuit.
This space will help train the next generation of federal prosecutors to prepare the right way, try cases the right way, and serve the public with excellence.
Grateful to honor a leader who helped shape this Office and our legal community.

Today, a federal jury in Miami returned guilty verdicts against Arcángel Pretel Ortiz, Antonio Intriago, Walter Veintemilla, and James Solages for their roles in the conspiracy that led to the assassination of the Haitian president.
This was a complex international plot planned in part from South Florida, carried out through deception, financing, and violence.

Operation Mousetrap shows the power of President Trump’s Homeland Security Task Force model: federal, state, and local partners working together to identify, disrupt, and charge a major cocaine trafficking network moving drugs into South Florida.
The result: more than 500 kilograms of cocaine, firearms, and millions in drug proceeds taken off the street.
That means fewer drugs in our neighborhoods, fewer weapons in criminal hands, and a major trafficking network taken apart.
“Operation Mousetrap” led by federal partners has dismantled a major cocaine trafficking network operating through Miami, with drugs sourced from Colombia and routed through the Dominican Republic. Investigators seized hundreds of kilograms of cocaine, including a shipment exceeding 500 kg, along with millions of dollars and firearms tied to a high-rise stash site. This case highlights the reach and coordination of the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) and its partner agencies. The message is clear: if you participate, you will be found, prosecuted, and face severe consequences.
