The Governor's property tax proposal was released roughly 24 hours ago. The Legislature is expected to vote on it early next week. For a proposal that could fundamentally restructure local government finance in Florida, that's warp speed. As I see it, lawmakers have three options. Realistically, only two are viable. 🧵

Great piece by @MaxChesnes @TB_Times on the threat of SB290 to the future of FL conservation lands. State conservation lands protect habitat for wildlife public access for Floridians--selling them into private agriculture would be tragic. @AudubonFL tampabay.com/news/environmen…

Speak up, Florida! This would give sweeping priority to surplus new state conservation lands for ag. Priority over public use, wildlife habitat, H2Oshed protection, w/ the proceeds going to the ag dept. Think sugar on Everglades restoration land, peanuts instead of new parks...
A new bill would create a pipeline where conservation lands are acquired with public dollars — then reviewed for agricultural ā€œsuitabilityā€ and potentially sold off (though retaining the easement), permanently changing Florida’s conservation programs. audubon.stagecoachdigital.co…

2 WORDS: LOOP CURRENT. For those who weren't around during Deepwater Horizon, you won't remember the ticking horror of the well leaking relentlessly, maps of the extent of the spill spreading, the angst as it crept closer daily to the Gulf Loop Current... 1/2
The Trump administration released new plans Thursday that could push offshore oil drilling closer to Florida shores in a move that many environmental critics argue will be detrimental to the state’s economy and threaten imperiled wildlife. Via @MaxChesnes tampabay.com/news/environmen…

Opposition to drilling in the Eastern Gulf is an issue that unites Floridians and always has. In Florida, our environment IS our economy.

At bitter end of 2025 Session, appropriators slipped a blank check in Budget obligating FL to buy an unspecified parcel. The $$ was swept from funding to protect panther habitat springsheds. Gov Cabinet now on deck to scrutinize/approve deal: $83M for 4 storm-vulnerable acres
In today’s @TB_Times: The Florida Cabinet votes Tuesday to buy 4 acres of Destin land for a steep price tag: $83M The land •is not on the state’s conservation priority list •is owned by a large campaign donor Read more, with @mahoneysthename: tampabay.com/news/environmen…

SB 180 was sold as hurricane relief, but as predicted, is now being used to bully local governments to abandon growth management protections. Kudos to Orange County for standing up for their constituents and their future.
Huge thanks to Mayor Demings and the Orange County Commission for standing firm! By protecting the Rural Boundary, keeping the Lake Pickett safeguards, and defending the 2050 Plan, they put our future, not sprawl, first.

Despite the urging of FL voters of all stripes, the state budget--finalized this PM by Legislature--includes a paltry $18m for #FloridaForever, the state land protection program that creates FL state parks, forests wildlife mgmt areas.
Florida Forever appropriation falls woefully short, despite outpouring of advocacy from Floridians. We need your voice: act.audubon.org/a/floridafor…

Great news for Florida habitat protection today--thanks, @GovRonDeSantis, AG @JamesUthmeierFL, & Commissioner @WiltonSimpson. Big wins for O2O corridor Withlacoochee State Forest.
Audubon Florida thanks the Governor and Cabinet today for approving the acquisition of more than 76,000 acres of conservation easements in Northeast Florida - a strategic lynchpin in the O2O corridor conservation effort. 1/3

Governor DeSantis FL Senate have both called for at least $100M in state budget for #FloridaForever; House proposals thusfar = $0. Floridians universally care about our public lands protecting the iconic landscapes that make FL like no other.
Annual funding for Florida Forever ensures that the state can purchase important wild places from willing sellers to make the parks, forests, and WMAs of the future. We need your voice – this time to protect future special places.Ā  act.audubon.org/a/floridafor…
