'If good faith is undermined to the point where duplicity is assumed on all sides, politics is bound to become mired in a cold civil war, or worse.' Excellent and very timely article by Rob Simpson. newstatesman.com/2020/02/how…

Today's artist without a (known) birthday: Hieronymus Francken of Antwerp. Painter of elegant folks enjoying art and parties. Here, some connoisseurs hanging out in a collection, being clever about art & science.

2/2 Look at the images up there, hanging from the ceiling at Santa Maria Maggiore. How often do you think they hung things like that? So cool.

This. People always ask me: where's the harm? Privacy harms are a time-shifted risk. The moment you are protesting against your government, a seamless cashless public transport system can turn into a data trove for surveillance crowd control.

There is usually never a line at the train ticketing machines. Judging from an overheard convo, it appears that people are reluctant to use their rechargeable Octopus cards for fear of leaving a paper trail of them having been present at the protest.

Can we just kill all Viking clichés please......
"We had to kill the Vikings, bc they bathed and brushed their hair and our wives couldn't resist such sophistication" is a HELL of a take by medieval English chroniclers. #MedievalTwitter

In this banquet scene, Paolo Veronese (d. OTD 1588) creates a vast tableau of incredible opulence for the lucky Dominican friars of SS. Giovanni e Paolo. But is it Biblical?? The Inquisition wants to know!

May Preston was the first woman to receive a PhD in Philosophy in the US. The year was 1880 and the school, @Cornell. Her dissertation (and thus the first US woman philosopher's dissertation) was on Aesthetics. Titled, "Different Theories of Beauty". I have a copy to share!

Take a moment to marvel at this triumph of 16th c. technology which still works beautifully, 479 years after the book was printed. The vovelles (spinning disks) of Astronomicum Caesareum were used to help predict the rising & setting of the sun & moon, the tides, and more.
