Years ago when my wife and I we were planning to buy our home, my dad stunned me with a quick mental calculation of loan payments. I asked him how - he said he'd learned the strange formula for compound interest from his father, who was a merchant in 19th century Iran. 🧵 1/4

Provocative argument: Google Scholar (and its citation indexing predecessors) is the cause of the great stagnation in breakthrough innovation. By rewarding citation count, science has unknowingly shifted its emphasis from novelty to incremental work. nber.org/system/files/workin…

The replies in this thread are disappointing. Paper prototyping: 1) is fast & fluid 2) allows u to sketch at speed of thought 3) is not restrained by limits or demands of a digital tool 4) elicits conversation in feedback 5) doesn’t hijack user’s brain like digital does.
Mobile apps design done, paper prototypes done and ready to be tested next week with children's family and friends! Love the @designclub sessions I've been running! #uxdesign #userresearch #education

This. 100%.
No-one goes out shopping to "panic buy". What you see are individuals responding to uncertainty. People don't like uncertainty. Throwing the term "panic buying" around detracts from the root of the problem. Don't ask why are they panic buying. Ask why there is uncertainty.

Sad to hear today of the death of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. He contributed so much through his research on creativity, which helped me decide to do a PhD, happiness, his concept of flow - which guides me daily - and more.

Amazing advice, received today: When dining at a restaurant, order whatever the fattest person at the table orders. It is invariably delicious. 🤣

A lot of smart observations in replies. I think the lesson from Apple is not to forgo user research, but rather to focus on thinking HARD about what you see from users rather than taking it at face value.

Do you play computer chess? In 1957 economist and artificial intelligence pioneer Herbert Simon was one of the first people to predict that computer chess would surpass human chess abilities. The chess set pictured belonged to Simon, who was born #OTD 1916.

*Strongly* recommend this comprehensive review of just how much COVID19 vaccines reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to others. Tell the hesitant: the vaccines protect both you and protect others -- a lot! @mugecevik @AaronRichterman @EricMeyerowitz academic.oup.com/ofid/advanc…

Nice does not equal weak. I hate the double standards that get created! How about we pour our efforts into editing the culture and environment women are in, rather than edit the woman.

Public service announcement: You can’t refute evidence with opinions. When you disagree with data, you have 3 options: 1. Find better data 2. Identify limitations of the existing data 3. Consider the possibility that you were wrong, and have the humility & integrity to admit it
