On February 1st 1884 – the first part of the Oxford English Dictionary was published. As an aside, a fantastic fantasy novel, Babel by R.F. Kaung, discusses the entomology of English words in the context of colonialism and racism. bookofthemonth.com/all-books…

This was a good summit that reiterated a recent tweet of mine - patients deserve systems that don’t require them to coordinate their own care.

It also reinforced that what we need is to focus on recovery for patients. That why we need more PT’s like @polloktm. @CAIROrg has been shouting this for a while - we need to reorganize the system so it works.

Just completed my last Podcast for @SCCM. Have really enjoyed the opportunity to meet so many people over the last few years thanks to Dr. Valcin about the new ICU Wellness Kit at #sccm2023. Don’t worry - we don’t talk about box breathing!

And the amazing learning continues here at #SCCM2023 reminding us of the importance of post-ICU care (@CAIROrg) and that our patients should not need to coordinate their own care.

So what are the predictions for staffing: grim for all professions in healthcare - impact more burnout, worse clinical care, bad patient outcomes. #sccm2023

Why are nurses leaving, it’s complicated but here are some big issues:

@AndrewBarros makes the great point that the fix requires money, which is a challenge in economically strained systems. x.com/AndrewBarros/status/16…

This is what worries be about critical care — unless organizations make structural changes we will continue to hemorrhage staff and be unable to care for patients #SCCM2023

But right now we can improve the working environment which reduces moral distress and reduces intent to leave (bonus HWE doesn’t just impact nurses).
