I explore the history of the (mis)understanding of airborne disease transmission from the ancient concept of miasma to the modern myth of the aerosol-generating procedure! Here's a little teaser 👀

Oh my dear God. What the fucking #Robodebt is this?? I just watched the last hour of the NDIS bill hearing and watched as @SenatorJordon, who has the patience of a saint, explain the actual NDIS and what a job interview looks like to a bunch of senior bureaucrats who have been called in to explain the enormous clusterfuck that is the plan for the former NDIS, which will harm hundreds of thousands of disabled people. At the end, he LOSES it. Justifiably. Go watch:) And then I get curious about who one guy is so I look at a govt table which says he’s now working in and a different name catches my eye. Russell de Burgh. ‘While working as the branch manager of the Pensions and Integrity branch of the Department of Social Services, De Burgh was identified by the #Robodebt Royal Commission as one of the officials who made "false representations" regarding the lawfulness and operation of the Robodebt program.’ And now this man has a very senior role in Health, rolling out cuts that will end lives and livelihoods in exchange for AUKUS submarines. I do not know why I am still shocked, yet I am. #RoboNDIS

I find it so bizarre that people think it’s more important to be shielded from the thought of bad things than to be given the tools to deal with them. The pandemic response has been all about shielding people from anxiety rather than protecting them from a harmful virus.

BA.3.2 - a "forever" variant? I've always wondered why BA.3.2 has persisted for such a long time. Now we know that it mainly targets the 0-4-year age group, and we know why. Could that explain its persistence? This means its primary host population is effectively renewed every four years, with new cohorts of largely immunologically naive children entering the population, aside from maternal antibodies. That dynamic does not apply to most other variants. It could help explain why BA.3.2 has been around for so long and may suggest it has long-term staying power, especially if, beyond its antibody-evasion advantage, it is particularly well adapted to infecting young children. #BA32

The hardest thing about COVID isn’t the science. It’s the invoice. Accepting the evidence means paying for years of miscalculations, bad assumptions, social conformity, and public certainty. Most people would rather dispute the bill than pay it.

Every hero eventually disappoints someone. Not because they’re evil. Not because they’re stupid. Because changing your mind has a cost. To acknowledge that COVID still poses serious long-term risks would require many people to revisit years of assumptions, decisions, public statements, and personal behavior. That’s not just updating a belief. That’s rewriting part of your identity. And for most people, denial is cheaper than reconstruction. @DrInfoSec

Thinking happy thoughts doesn’t fix a tumour.
Replying to @michael_hoerger
In cancer, patients are often taught to be optimistic, smile, and put on hope, as though that will shrink their tumors. It does not. It invalidates suffering and inflicts blame on those experiencing progression. The phony optimism culture persists today.

“During the darkest days of the AIDS crisis we buried our friends in the morning, we protested in the afternoon, and we danced all night, and it was the dance that kept us in the fight because it was the dance we were fighting for.” – Dan Savage
