Zoning in America is what youโ€™d get if every old crank with an axe to grind got to write a law to limit something they didnโ€™t like. I appreciate the work of dismantling these walls to prosperity and equity brick by brick, but at what point do we just tear the whole thing down?
We're making childcare WAY more accessible (๐Ÿงต) For decades, building childcare facilities hasn't been allowed in most of Austin (yellow/red). My first item of 2023 is changing this. Now, nearly our entire city will be zoned for childcare development (green).

it's incredible that so many people refuse to use perhaps the greatest, most life-saving invention of all time because they're afraid of needles

Cars hit buildings, 7-11 in particular, so frequently and with such force, it is incumbent on the business to protect themselves with real bollards. Yet the message for people on foot/bikes is to prevent their own deaths with eye contact, foam hats and bright colors.

7-11 just had to pay 91 million because they had no bollards and a guy lost both legs when a car hit him. This type of accident and lawsuit is common

I don't think people realize the dangers they put disabled people in when expecting us to ask for "nicely" for accommodations. Not only can they refuse it. It puts a target on our backs. And they can later attack us by mentioning that they gave us accessibility once.

How to become wealthy in the USA: * Never get sick * Never have a sick spouse, or divorce them immediately if they get sick * Don't allow your children to get sick * Don't take care of your parents or siblings if they get sick * Inherit a home or enough money to buy a home

i just dont get why people think single family homes have to be coddled like these flustered chickens and need these big tall buildings wrapping the perimeter like the castle walls and to have such admiration of the classical city and not realize none taper density like that

the legacy environmental movement had some big wins fifty years ago but today it's exactly this pastoralist sentiment *within the democratic coalition* that's standing in the way of solving many of our problems from carbon to housing

Key point here: The effort by Senate Dems to examine Starlink's contracts with the Defense Department are perfectly consistent with the sort of oversight Congress often does. Don't let the Musk distortion field obscure that truth.
Elon Musk runs a US defense contractor. He's shown himself to be an unreliable partner, at best ignorant of international affairs and susceptible to Russian propaganda. Executive branch oversight and defense procurement are part of Congress's job. They're looking into it. Good.
