🙌 New blog alert! It was great to collaborate with Rinske Jongma over this summer on using generative AI for summarising political speeches

The summaries generated by LLMs performed well with both human and automated evaluations thus underscoring their potential to efficiently capture and analyse political narratives.
I'm looking forward to participating in the Policy Live event this Thursday! 🙌
I will present highlights from our latest report on innovation trends around technologies for supporting development of young children! 🐣

🤖 AI is powering a wave of digital technology aimed at supporting families – with the UK leading in Europe.
We analysed investment and research trends to understand the trajectory of this emerging tech. ⬇️ bit.ly/4cCeVJ8
🙌 Excited to share our @nesta_uk new report on innovation trends in early-years digital technologies!
Our study points to a burgeoning ecosystem of tech and AI that could enhance the way we support child development.
A few highlights in the thread: 1/n

📈 Overall, this is our take on digital tech application trends in early years: a particularly strong growth in research funding and publications across different applications - and positive but more mixed picture for innovation closer to commercialisation. 7/n
We point to three promising directions for further work:
- Addressing evidence gaps with systematic evaluation
- Designing and testing tools with caregivers
- Addressing barriers to commercialisation
9/n
Over the coming months, Nesta will explore how AI can empower early-years professionals to provide more high-quality and effective early education experiences, alongside continuing to invest in promising companies.
Check out the report for details! 10/10

📖 Another prominent area of application is development and learning. For example, neurocognitive games and speech recognition algorithms aiming to assess literacy and screen for learning difficulties. 6/n
❤️🩹 Most of the applications of early-years tech appear to be health-related. For example, innovations for predictive early intervention for foetal monitoring or forecasting health outcomes. 5/n
🤖 AI is becoming increasingly prominent in early-years innovation, with high growth and substantial proportion of digital tech across all our datasets. 4/n
🌊 We found a wave of innovation in early-years tech, with particularly strong growth in the ‘upstream’ research and development - research funding and publications. 3/n
🔎 To capture innovation trends and find compelling examples of emerging technologies, we analysed data on research funding, publications, patents and venture funding.
For this we used vast datasets maintained by @UKRI_News, @OpenAlex_org , @Google Patents, and @crunchbase

Breaking:
This is what is supposed to be a humanitarian area. All of Gaza has been a genocidal area.
The Israel tanks open fire at displaced people in Mawasi Khan Younis while in their tents.
You can see the tents. You can hear the tanks. You can watch the families and children running away. You can see a wounded person.
📅 Upcoming online event on AI
On 16 September, award-winning AI journalist Karen Hao joins @nesta_uk Chief Practices Officer James Plunkett to explore the role of AI in solving challenges while mitigating ethical risks.
