We don’t know if @JMilei plan will work or not but Buenos Aires is certainly a beautiful city which richly merits a renaissance
As Javier Milei swings his reform chainsaw through Argentina, his hope is that foreign investors and executives will flock to his freshly deregulated economy. Our reporters break down Mileil's 'radical technofuturism' approach ⤵️ telegraph.co.uk/business/202…

The issue here is not prosperity but desire & design.
The Newsagent at Frith Street in Soho, London. The top photo was taken 70 years ago on 14th June 1956. Same corner, but what a difference.

An important point. We call it the virtuous circle of place. Locations that people find attractive are normally aligned with good public health & social benefits. Trust the people. There is wisdom in crowds.
a weird general rule in urbanism is that the more aesthetic choice often delivers some enormous public benefit narrow lane widths are not just picturesque; they're also associated with FAR LOWER pedestrian fatality rates

The elections are over. How can new councillors and councils improve prosperity and productivity, health and happiness in their little slice of Britain? Here’s the good news. Despite everything, they can. Here are five suggestions which I wrote up today in @ConHome

Building for the long term is true green not gizmo green
One of the core benefits of structural masonry is that it can endure long periods of neglect and be brought back to life. Wood just can’t take abandonment on the chin.

The damn of traffic modernism is breaking
Ponce Park in Coral Gables is gonna fit right in to the Mediterranean architecture seen all over the city. A breath of fresh air after all the glass towers I’ve been covering in Miami - 58 units - 11 stories tall - Completion: early 2028

Teeing up @createstreets next report nicely with polling on what physical street improvements voters from different parties care about the most (Beyond Potholes that is) Watch this space. Phone boxes and cleanliness WILL feature
It’s not deranged that thousands of tourists line up every day for a photo by the old red phone box looking up at Big Ben as their treasured picture from London. It’s deranged “not my job-ism” means this is so battered an stinky the very sign “telephone” is half-hanging off. What kind of impression does that give of the UK? Would take 10 seconds to map most instagrammed sites like this and give them a good scrub.

🚊It's time for trams. Since the announcement, I've been lobbying Government to accelerate the delivery of trams in West Yorkshire. I won't stop until that happens.

It is one of the great paradoxes of our age that as we have got richer, our streets have got poorer

To visit Barcelona’s soaring Sagrada Família basilica is to visit a parallel universe in which architectural modernism barely happened, symbolism & decoration remained acceptable & we kept creating places with joy, natural patterns & a whiff of the sacred. My latest article in…

Making places nicer wins votes on left and right. Who knew?
Such a shame when the Labour administration cancelled this excellent scheme after taking control of the council in 2022, basically because it was something nice and costing money in a Tory-voting ward. It was so lovely. Their pledge to restore it is part of why I hoped they won

Atlanta is creating splendid new Gentle Density. These Row Houses (🇺🇸 = Terraced Houses in 🇬🇧) are less than 20 years old. This welcome abundance of homes means that though Atlanta has household incomes comparable to London, living costs are much lower. Everyone wins. (Via our wise fellow @bswud who is worth a follow not least for the cute baby photos!)

Traffic modernism has failed. It is time for a new movement that is humane and resilient, kind to places and kind to people.
The status quo isn’t working.

100%.
Calling it now. People being able to clearly articulate an alternative architectural aesthetic will have a measurable impact on what gets built in the future. We're going to have a Cambrian explosion of new architectural experiments *and* a return to previous forms.
