Look what I get to take home. Last night, DEATH OF THE AUTHOR won the Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel and THE SPACE CAT won for Best Illustrated and Art Book. My daughter Anyaugo was there with me 😊.

I got a call from my daughter’s high school principal today. He said she’d been caught operating an “unauthorized commercial enterprise” out of the girls’ locker room. My stomach DROPPED. I left work immediately, already imagining the worst: Drugs. Vapes. Stolen stuff. Some TikTok side hustle gone wrong. By the time I got to the school, I was preparing myself for lawyers, suspension, maybe even police involvement. I walk into the principal’s office….…and my daughter is sitting there quietly with a spiral notebook full of spreadsheets. Not cash. Not customer lists. Spreadsheets. Turns out, she’d noticed some girls at school were quietly struggling: • no money for feminine hygiene products • no winter jackets • wearing the same clothes every week after budget cuts hit families hard So she started her own underground support network. She collected donated jackets, hygiene products, gloves, and clothes from wealthier neighborhoods.
Then she cataloged everything by size and need in her notebook like a tiny operations manager. And from her gym locker, she distributed items discreetly to students who needed them — no embarrassment, no announcements, no attention. The principal wasn’t calling because she was in trouble. He called because the school found out… and wanted my permission to turn her “illegal locker room business” into an official school charity program.
I thought I was driving to the biggest parenting nightmare of my life. Instead, I walked into one of the proudest moments I’ve ever had as a parent.

My last US visa i/view was funny in a good way. When I told the VO (stern man) my reason for travel, he smiled widely & said "I wish I had your job". I was going to California for Nissan 360° on invitation, a 5-star celebration of the carmaker's work. After that, Comic-Con. So...

I find visa interviews humiliating, and that’s why you will never see me at an embassy unless absolutely necessary, either for work or for study. You gave politically correct answers and still got rejected, and this reminded me of my experience there. My first odd question was being asked why I visited Cuba, of all the tens of countries I listed as having visited. I told the visa officer that I was there for a conference, and that it was a beautiful place. Not sure that was a politically correct response.
The second bad response I gave was when I was asked about the longest I had stayed in the US in a stretch, and I told them. Then they asked if I enjoyed my stay. I told them no. And the next question was why I didn’t enjoy my stay and why I was going back.
I told them I lived in a predominantly white city, and had to struggle to get familiar food and even a barber, and so it was a nightmare for me. As for why I was still going back, I told them I was going there for work, and nothing more, as I’m not one to venture out on trips to other countries unless for education or work. I got my visa the next day.
