New: I talked to the head of adolescent psychiatry at Georgetown Medical Center about rising teen anxiety: - What's causing it? - What's not causing it? - How can we—teens, parents, citizens—help fix it? Hands down, one of the best eps we've done. open.spotify.com/episode/1vx…

The Post’s Outlook section, our home for ideas journalism, closed last week after 68 years. I was its final editor (I departed last fall), and I’ve been struggling to gather my thoughts. I’m sad — and also so grateful for my eight years there and the staff I worked with. 1/x

Elsa Majimbo nails it: "Social media portrays lives that don't exist."
Do you buy the idea that social media has been really challenging for people, asks @katejulian? @ElsaAngel19 responds providing her perspective as a member of the younger generation: Social media portrays lives that don't exist, and personally I saw all of that. #TAF22

Such a great answer from @theelysemyers — let’s make talking about mental health as normal as talking about the weather.
.@TheAtlantic's @katejulian asks @theelysemyers how she factors mental health in her content on @tiktok_us at #TAF22: To casually bring it up, I think it makes people feel normal and not feel heavy about it when talking about it.

Please join me @theelysemyers, @jean_twenge & @ElsaAngel19 on the Atlantic Festival's Ideas Stage Thursday around 325, either in person or streaming. We’ll discuss what social media is doing to our mental health--and how our mental health can fight back. And we'll laugh a lot.

2/ Historians will know more about the decision-making process behind the tragic events. To date, this essay by @andrewsweiss & @eugene_rumer best captures Putin's motivation for going into this war. Unfortunately, it turned out to be prophetic. carnegieendowment.org/2021/1…

(1/2) True story: My agent asked me for book ideas. I said I was so inspired by Spiegelman's "Maus" that I wanted to do a graphic novel about the risks of treating Putin like a cartoon villain The result: "Accidental Czar: the Life and Lies of Vladimir Putin" w @boxbrown! 👇👇👇

In 2017, I ended a wanted pregnancy, and in the years since, I've never seen the uncertainty of my own situation reflected in anyone else's experiences. So I wrote something. Here it is: theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv…

This week, #TheExperimentPodcast shares a story from @today_explained: Humans have long used alcohol as a tool for social enrichment, but The Atlantic’s @katejulian argues that Americans have a more dysfunctional relationship to drinking. Listen here: bit.ly/2M1Hk56

#AlcoholAbuse in America has risen steadily, and alcohol-related deaths have doubled, and that was before Covid hit. The Pandemic was an excuse for people to drink more, drink in the day, and drink alone.

Wonderful thread from @chwoodiwiss, who distills (sorry) the historical sections of my drinking essay much more effectively than I ever could. (Also be sure to check out @slingerland20's new book, Drunk, which a large part of the essay is based on.)
I'm going to tweet highlights from this @katejulian piece because it's so delightful, and explores so much more ground than its title suggests. Here we go: A brief human history of alcohol. theatlantic.com/magazine/arc…
