Children are in crisis. 80% of Gr 4s can’t read for meaning. How will they realise their potential? We can’t keep talking about acting: we need to act. - Prof Mark Tomlinson at the launch of #ChildGauge2024

Will the South Africa government delegation today commit to restoring the #CSG to its original value? Or will it continue to raise lack of financial resources as the reason why South Africa cannot feed its children? #UNCRC #ChildRightsNow #CRC95 @UPChildLaw @ChildRightsCnct

When the #CSG was introduced in 1998 its value was based on the cost of food and clothing for a child. It now no longer covers the cost of food. Almost 8 million children in South Africa are living below the food poverty line. #UNCRC #ChildRightsNow #CRC95

South Africa is currently in the throes of a major fiscal crisis, right? Wrong. The @IEJ_SA has released a policy brief clearly showing that notions of a 'fiscal crisis' are exaggerated, & orchestrated by Treasury with the support of the financial press iej.org.za/iej-statement-cla…

The CSG has easily reached a large number of poor children & has the most pro-poor targeting record of all social grants. The review reflects on state of child poverty in SA, documents the policy process in development & expansion of CSG & reviews impact of CSG on child poverty.

How can it be justifiable to perpetuate inequality, deliberately?
This afternoon we released a report scorecard on the 2023/24 budget. This scorecard provides an overview of health, debt, gender, grants to name a few. We reiterate our calls for a more people-centred #Budget2023. For more information on recent outputs: budgetjusticesa.org/advocacy…

Look at the stark inequality in inflation!
[Op ed] #Budget2023 short-changes those in greatest need - children. Poor households spend a larger share of their budgets on basics - and inflation in these categories is higher than the headline rate ❗️Our Senior Researcher Dr @Kath__Hall in @BDliveSA bit.ly/3YfqFtV

The grant is intended to cover the cost of feeding a child, and is already substantially below the food poverty line (R663 per person per month).

We're relieved the announcement of 0 increases in April was a mistake. It's especially NB following high inflation rates over past year. However we're concerned the April increase to CSG (which amounts to 4.2% increase on its April 2022 value) is still far below food inflation!

Meanwhile, a flyer with SASSA branding has been widely circulated, indicating 0 increases to the 2 child grants in April. The incorrect info also appeared on SASSA's website this AM. SASSA has told us the flyer was not authorised by it & the info on the website will be corrected

Both @OfficialSASSA and @The_DSD have subsequently confirmed to us that increases to the two grants will in fact be implemented this April. The #CSG will increase by R20, to R500 per month, on 1 April, with a further R10 increase in October, bringing the amount to R510.

It implied that these 2 NB grants which respectively reach 13 mil of the poorest children & a quarter of a million children in foster care, would receive no increases in April! However, the Budget Review (chapter 5) suggests that the increase will be split across April & October.

But he then said: “The Child Support Grant rises from R480 to R510 on 1 October 2023, while the Foster Care Grant increases from R1070 to R1130 over the same period”. His statement implied that those children would have to wait another six months for their increases!
