Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga delivers a Keynote Address to the in Down Syndrome South Africa and the African Down Syndrome Network Side Event taking place on the sidelines of the UN COSP19, under the theme : NOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT US: Self-Advocates Moving From Participation to Representation. Minister Chikunga emphasized that , 20 years after the CRPD, “ inclusion has been extended to persons with intellectual disabilities, including persons with Down syndrome. Yet too often the spirit of the CRPD has struggled to translate into real-world impact for persons with Down syndrome. Too often they are spoken about rather than spoken with. Their lives have too often been shaped by decisions, by services, by institutions and by assumptions made without their direct input. We must move beyond this. We need a shift from visibility to voice, from presence to power, and from participation to representation”.
