@M_L_Wahlstrom & I have an article that explores how Greta Thunberg influenced participants in the 2019 Fridays For Future global climate strikes. It is based on surveys of climate protesters in 15 countries and 22 cities in Europe. 1/2 journals.sagepub.com/doi/ful…

We propose that Greta had two important roles: political icon & role model. As political icon, she inspired people to join the protests and feel more motivated, solidary and collective. As role model, she especially attracted young women who saw her as an example to follow. 2/2

”Demonisera inte miljöaktivister” Ministrarnas försök att utestänga delar av klimatrörelsen från offentligheten riskerar bara att undergräva tilliten till det demokratiska samtalet. Det skriver flera forskare. svd.se/a/wA2GyP/forskare-dem…

This book includes many interesting chapters about protests in small countries that are often off the radar of common social movement research! Had a privilege to contribute with a piece based on my protest event data for Estonia (1991-2020).
Upcoming Book! Handbook of Civil Society and Social Movements in Small States (@routledgebooks) - Edited by Lino Briguglio, Michael Briguglio, Sheila Bunwaree, Claire Slatter, 2023 More info: routledge.com/Handbook-of-Ci… #SocialMovements #CivilSociety #SmallStates #PoliticalSociology

My great colleagues find that the human toll of disasters is not a significant determinant of adaptation actions in cities globally. Next question to ask is about the role of protests for adaption actions ;-)
#ClimateAdaptation & disasters are in the spotlight at #COP27, but whether disasters drive #adaptation action is contested. Our @NatureComms study finds the human toll of disasters is not a significant determinant of adaptation actions in cities globally. nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

My brilliant colleague has written very interesting piece about labor identity
How are cohesive labour movements created? In this @ActaSocJournal piece, @JenJansson finds that labour leaders actively managed identity formation in the Swedish case, but internal education was also critical for creating cohesiveness. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.…

Colleagues have commented on the legitimacy & effectiveness of recent climate actions like #SoupGate & #MashedMonet using general social movement theory. But can climate activism really be understood like other movements? I argue it cannot as I give my take on the matter👇👇 1/14
