107 years ago today, over 30 women's rights activists in Virginia were horrifically brutalized by 40 guards at the Occoquan Workhouse prison in what's been called the "Night of Terror." The attacks, fueled by the state's systemic support of the patriarchy, were intended to intimidate the suffragists through physical abuse and psychological degradation. These brave women were locked up for practicing nonviolent civil disobedience and picketing the White House to pressure President Woodrow Wilson to support the 19th Amendment. The level of cruelty inflicted onto them was shocking.
