Yesterday, advocates from across the country met with members of Congress and their staff, urging lawmakers to support legislation that addresses the root causes of hunger. In this update, Bread for the World Director of Government Relations Bob Powers breaks down where the bill stands, what is strong, what concerns remain, and how advocates can take action — including Bread’s call to delay the SNAP State Cost Share provision in the Senate’s version of the Farm Bill.

At Bread for the World’s 23rd Gala to End Hunger, Cardinal Sean O’Malley reminded us that hunger grows when people are ignored or forgotten. Inspired by Pope Francis, he called us to choose compassion, care for our neighbors, and speak up for justice. Take action with Bread for the World and urge Congress to support people experiencing hunger in the U.S. and around the world: go.bread.org/page/90712/acti…

Love looks like a lot of things. It looks like early mornings, packed lunches, and making sure everyone else eats first. This Mother’s Day, we honor the ways mothers and caregivers show up again and again with care that sustains. Happy Mother’s Day 💛

While the bipartisan passage of the Farm Bill in the House of Representatives provides meaningful support for some critical food and nutrition initiatives, this legislation was a missed opportunity for several key programs that reduce hunger. At Bread for the World, we are committed to continuing our advocacy for an effective Farm Bill so no one is left behind. Read the full statement: bread.org/article/bread-for-…

With all that is happening around the world, it can be easy to lose sight of the ongoing challenges of families facing food insecurity. People are now beginning to experience the impacts of cuts to SNAP from H.R. 1. We pray for families who rely on SNAP to stretch their grocery budgets, but whose access to that support has changed. Join us in prayer: bread.org/article/prayers-to…

Bread for the World was proud to cohost a bipartisan Food for Peace Reception this week alongside the Interfaith Working Group on Foreign Assistance, celebrating the members of Congress and multifaith partners behind a program that has delivered lifesaving food assistance to millions for over 70 years. Food for Peace reflects the best of who we are, responding to hunger with action, compassion, and global leadership. We’re especially grateful to @RepMann and @RepJimCosta for their continued bipartisan support. Join us in thanking Congress for funding Food for Peace in the FY26 budget and prioritizing programs that help feed our neighbors around the world: go.bread.org/page/93738/acti…

The President’s fiscal year 2027 budget request proposes cuts to programs including $15.5 billion to State Department and international programs that have broad bipartisan support, eliminating Food for Peace and the McGovern-Dole Food for Education Program, $4.3 billion to global health programs, and a $4.9 billion cut to USDA that would drop the WIC cash-value benefit from $50 per month to roughly $10–$13. We are encouraged that members of Congress on both sides of the aisle have reaffirmed the importance of congressional oversight and the power of the purse. We look forward to working with appropriators on both sides of the aisle to ensure our nation’s commitment to ending hunger remains strong. Read the full statement: bread.org/article/bread-for-…
