This would be long and probably my first time in 3 years openly talking about this in public. First I would like to say that managing this without meds would depend on how bad your ADHD is. This worked for me:
1. Mind mapping: This means creating a system that enables you remember things. This could be pairing things together, aligning certain objects you enjoy with other objects you don’t so you remember.
A good example: l always forgot to lock my apartment, so I placed the keys right on the large mirror at my door. Thing is I am vain and I use that mirror every morning to comb my hair and dress up. I always remembered to lock up because the key was there at the door as I am about to leave.
When I get into a car I place any large item that can’t go in my pocket on the door handle. The moment I open the door to leave that item falls off and I remember I had it.
DON’T ever fall for the trap of keeping things hidden, because you will never remember where you kept it, instead have a specific spot where each item goes daily and like clock work. Your brain registers that place with that item. An example my key goes into a small pouch in my bag every single day. I don’t have the worry of it getting lost because it’s in there even though I’ve forgotten.
2. Notes: Take written down notes of everything and anything. Don’t fall for that tiny voice telling you “you will remember” no you won’t. Take detailed notes like a baby. If you read my notes you will think a toddler wrote them. The aim is to remember the exact thought you had at the time because chances are you won’t remember the instruction or the specific circumstances. In my line of work as a Lawyer this is very key. I will share an example attached.
For those who have managed their ADHD symptoms without meds, what has helped you the most? Welcoming high level and grounded/practical advice.
