In Texas felony cases like murder (especially when the jury assesses punishment), sentencing or the start of the punishment phase often happens the same day as the guilty verdict.
It’s quite common, not unusual.
I’ve never seen a judge immediately transfer a 19-year-old kid to state custody on the same day the guilty verdict was rendered, with video evidence of his alleged crime not released to the public, and then announce their retirement shortly afterward.
