Once again Kallas has exposed her lack of skills as a diplomat and representative of the EU!
From day one I have thought she was a bad choice and it has only gotten worse.
Disgusting if true.
When representing the EU on foreign policy issues, every statement sends a signal rather than just serving as a slogan.
Comparing Israel to apartheid-era South Africa is not a harmless metaphor. It shifts the EU away from its carefully established stance, deepens divisions among Member States, and fuels perceptions that Europe is biased and unreliable in the Middle East.
We have seen where this kind of inconsistent messaging leads. Under Mogherini and later Borrell, ambiguous or biased comments on Israel and the region often caused confusion about the EU's official position, forcing capitals to focus on damage control instead of policy development.
Given this context, there were high hopes that under Kaja Kallas, EU foreign policy would become stronger, more principled, and clearer (making these questionable remarks all the more disappointing and politically damaging).
If we aim for a principled, value-driven EU, our language must be precise, based on international law and shared positions, rather than provocative rhetoric that burns bridges, diminishes our influence, and makes partners question whether EU Commission can be trusted to represent Europe.
