📢Yesterday, our team participated in one of five community training series being conducted by
@L10nLab on localization, a process which, in our context, involves adapting and customizing content to meet the needs of our audiences.
Part of our work in serving marginalized communities involves localization through contextualizing and translating issues to ensure that communities receive information in a way that is relevant and accessible to them for them to make informed decisions.
Here are three reasons why localization matters:⬇️
1. Increased accessibility- translating content into local languages like Ndebele, Shona, Xhosa, Tonga, Kalanga, Venda, Sign Language, etc, can promote inclusivity and ensure that communities receive information in their preferred local languages.
2. Impactful reporting- contextualizing and focusing on issues that are important to the local community can provide meaningful conversations and solutions to identified challenges.
3. Building trust- demonstrating an understanding of local issues and perspectives, and being culturally sensitive by considering nuances in local culture can build trust with the local community and can strengthen the credibility of journalists, public officials, and any other information custodians.
