There haven’t been many moments in recent years when I’ve felt amazed by a technological marvel—technological innovations seem to sneak up on us so that we’re used to them before we realize what a game changer they represent. Cell phones and AI are like that. But this week I went out for my first spin in a self-driving car and it was exhilarating, terrifying, and humbling because I know in a few years it will be regarded as absolutely mundane and these glimmers of amazement will seem quaint. Just asked it to drive to an address about 5 minutes from our house and sat there oohing and aahing at every turn, speed up, and stop. Seemed like science fiction until it didn’t. Now I know how our ancestors felt the first time they got into a car or plane or talked on a phone. Not used to that feeling and had the urge to memorialize it here on social media, which is another urge my younger self couldn’t have contemplated.
