Gone are the Ox-eye Daisies & Buttercups. From 'No Mow May' to 'Mow Mow June'.... the same roadside verges got mowed today. I wonder what you think? Pretty much zero pollen & nectar, no 'slowing the flow', no significant biodiversity benefit. Also it doesn't look great either...

A bricklayer in East Yorkshire has spent 35 years putting up barn owl nest boxes on weekends. This year, the region saw 308 owlets hatch. His name is Robert Salter. He's 56 and does bricklaying full time. In 1990, he saw a piece on the news about a man in Lincolnshire installing barn owl boxes, and decided he'd do the same. He started with five. He now has more than 350 boxes scattered across fields, farms, outbuildings, and trees in East Yorkshire. Every June, he takes four weeks off from bricklaying and visits them with his wife Sue. Scrambling up ladders, ringing chicks, cleaning boxes, repairing the ones the weather got to. He's a licensed bird ringer for the British Trust for Ornithology. In 2024, the region ringed 95 owlets. In 2025, the count was 308. The Barn Owl Trust says that nationally, this year was "pretty poor" for barn owl breeding, but east Yorkshire is the exception, and it's the exception because of one man with a ladder. The barn owl population in the UK was estimated at 4,000 pairs in the mid-2000s and crashed to roughly 1,000 by the early 2010s. The species is still recovering. Most of conservation is one person who refuses to give up.

Scotland will require swift bricks in all new buildings after MSPs backed a law to help endangered cavity-nesting birds. The move aims to support declining swift populations, which have fallen sharply since 1995, by creating safe nesting spaces in modern homes. Campaigners praised the decision and urged the rest of the UK to follow, saying low-cost bricks can make a vital difference for wildlife.

Not my usual tweet but I want a little rant. I got gifted 2 tickets to the Chelsea Flower Show so went with a friend yesterday. We paid for an overnight stay in a hotel, train fares and food. I can honestly say it was AWFUL. It was unbelievably busy with huge numbers of people making it impossible to walk - we were just shoved along by the crowd. I couldnโ€™t see any of the show gardens because the fight to see them was 5 people deep. Even if you did get to the front you were being pressured to move on. We gave up after 3 hours and went to the Chelsea Physic Garden along the road which was a much welcome oasis of calm. The organisers of the show should be ashamed of themselves. Visitor numbers need limiting and I feel so sorry for anyone for whom this was a first time long awaited visit #RHSChelsea #RHSChelseaFlowerShow @GWandShows @GWandShows @The_RHS

Well done Poland ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฑ ๐Ÿ‘. Poland began using specialised drones to detect and rescue Dogs living chained up or in neglectful conditions in rural areas of the country. The initiative aims to combat animal abuse that for years remained hidden in backyards and remote plots of land. Animal protection organisations and specialized units use drones with thermal cameras and powerful zoom lenses that make it possible to locate animals even at night. In addition, the images obtained serve as evidence to initiate legal action and remove the dogs in serious cases. Polish legislation states that dogs cannot be kept permanently chained and requires a minimum space for movement. Thanks to this technology, authorities have managed to detect abuse that was previously difficult to prove.
