What if every child who came to the ER got the right care, as quickly as possible, without extra tests or transfers? ARPA-H PM @LSMayMD joined Grand Rounds at Children’s National to tackle pediatric emergency readiness and unnecessary care. The vision is getting kids to where they need to be with even faster triage when they are critically ill. Want to help drive innovations like this? Learn more: arpa-h.gov/careers/what-is-a…

All #EPs know #COVID19 increased #antibioticresistant #infections & deaths, but it also pushed #antibioticstewardship to the back burner. Now #EDs have to help reverse that, say @LSMayMD of @UCDavisHealth & @DrMichaelPulia of @uwsmph. #FOAMed @writergina tinyurl.com/bdz2nxxj

Today's ED operations are crumbling. LOS for admitted pts rose 32% from 2019 to 2022. Pts leaving without treatment rose 86% (2.9% to 5.4%). Pts have longer waits, are more likely to leave, and board for long periods after admission. A major cause for this is nursing shortages.

Simulated disaster exercises are just one way we keep our department prepared to best serve our community in times of need. Our faculty, residents, nurses, technicians and surgical colleagues displayed amazing teamwork when put through the test!
More than 100 staff members and emergency responders from the community took part in a simulated plane crash exercise. This exercise tested @UCDavisEM's emergency management plans, trained staff, and helped improve the medical center's ability to deal with disasters.

Our ED has implemented a new program to help our providers prescribe PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) to patients that are at high risk of acquiring HIV. 🧵 below on details of how we are removing barriers to care for these patients who are often otherwise marginalized:

This weekend I had the privilege of experiencing what it was like to be a patient being cared for at a hospital that seem to have decided actually caring for patients was too hard. A thread /1

This is a great perspective. Even if a pathogen is endemic, it doesn't mean it doesn't cause harm. Cue in malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV. Best way to limit new harmful variants is to limit unconstrained spread. #variants #viruses #HarmReduction nature.com/articles/d41586-0…
