Algeria to Complete Last Links to Trans-Sahara Highway
Algerian companies are about to complete the missing links in Chad to the 4,500 kilometer long Trans Sahara Highway h linking Algeria, Chad, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Tunisia. Connection the Mediterranean ports of Algeria and Tunisia with Nigeria's Lagos Port on the Atlantic. Algerian technical team from the Algerian state owned National Company of Public Works (SNTP),has recently concluded its third mission to Chad to finalize technical and logistical preparations for the Trans-Saharan Road project. Two uncompleted sections, totalling close to 200 kilometers, will link N'Djamena, Chad's's capital, to the network.
The deployment is being carried out under the instructions of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and follows the recent signing of agreements between Algeria and Chad to accelerate cooperation in developing infrastructure including the building of a 40 MW power plant. It is also part of several infrastructure initiatives launched in recent months by Algeria to integrate the North African states with those of the Sahel. The projects include completing the section of the Trans Sahel Gas Pipeline running through Niger which will transport gas from Nigeria to the Mediterranean and a trans-Sahara railway project linking the Algiers with the border of Niger (eir.news/2026/06/news/algeri…) as well as energy projects (eir.news/2026/06/news/algeri… )
The highway across all six countries is 93 percent completed. It traverses some of the most challenging terrains in the world requiring specialized engineering techniques. Algeria is well placed to aid Chad in this work since Algerian companies, including SNTP and the Cosider Group, in cooperation with the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC has already completed its 2,400 km section of the highway.
It will facilitate the movement of goods, raw materials, and agricultural products, reducing logistics costs and stimulating trade in line with the vision of thee African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Serving a region of over 400 million people. By bringing efficient transportation infrastructure to the region it will enhance security in a region plagued by terrorism and banditry. The road network will support further infrastructure development including railways, and electrification in some of the most energy impoverished regions in Africa.
The highway is part of the 56,683 kilometer long Trans African Highway Network which envisions a Pan African highway network linking over 40 countries from the Mediterranean to Capetown and the Atlantic coast to the Indian Ocean. Weidel Calls For Nord Stream Reparations From Ukraine
In a press conference on Tuesday, AfD co-chairperson Alice Weidel demanded an explanation from Kiev on the alleged role in the sabotage of Nord Stream and demanded reparations. Last January, the Bundesgerichtshof (German Court of Cassation) had accused a foreign country of being behind the sabotage, outlining a profile that fits Ukraine.
Weidel spoke of a severe attack against a key German infrastructure and of huge economic consequences of the sabotage. At the same time, she said that it would be important to negotiate with Russia.
The AfD is leading by 4 points over the CDU in national polls.
In St. Petersburg, Putin had said that Russia could resume gas deliveries to Germany through the one Nord Stream pipeline which has not been destroyed. If Berlin wanted it, it could be done literally by pushing a button.
Former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, whom Putin had earlier proposed as a mediator in a peace negotiation with Kiev, was at the St. Petersburg Forum and met Putin in a private meeting in Moscow on June 5. When Putin made his name, the EU rejected it, but there were interesting reactions in Germany. Former SPD Bundestag leader Rolf Mützenich endorsed the proposal, and he was defended by CDU rep Armin Laschet from attacks coming from FDP warmonger Strack-Zimmermann.[ccc]
