I spied on a chat between some guy and a safety researcher. The guy was like "I quit my job & made a bucket list. Ive now done everything on that list. Im ready to work on safety, but its hard bc I dont conceptualize myself as a hero"

The researcher explained that he just thinks of himself as ant helping to move a log. He's not singlehandedly changing the world, but he's helping.
The worst part about eavesdropping is that you can't interject and be like excuse me you don't need to invent an ant koan. There's already a canon...

In my first job, I initially wasnt a pure SDE. Like...we had researchers who worked on models. We had SDEs who built the product. And then we had me. The data bitch. I handled lots of ad hoc requests. "Scrape some content. We need it in an hour." Etc.
One time the head of engineering apologized and asked me for a "last minute" request. Some researcher was on PTO and they needed his thing to be sped up. My task was literally just had to fiddle with the parameters he was passing to some library until it was fast without being too bad. Easy! Anyway, the deadline he was apologizing for was in a few DAYS. Thats when I knew I needed to graduate to being an SDE

Arrived outside my friend's bday party. I tapped on the glass and waved them over to let me in the apt. Sat w them. 4 guys vibecoding/hanging. Chatted.
10 minutes in the host startled and went "OH, you're [neet]!". And they all go "Ohhh"
They hadnt recognized me with short hair but they'd just...rolled with it. Let me in. Hung out.
