The Palisades Fire, which erupted on January 7, 2025, in the Santa Monica Mountains, became one of the most destructive wildfires in Los Angeles history. The fire burned over 23,000 acres, destroyed thousands of structures across Pacific Palisades, Topanga, and Malibu, and claimed multiple lives. Eyewitnesses and official reports confirmed widespread devastation, with satellite and aerial imagery shortly after the fire clearly showing scorched landscapes and leveled homes. Google reportedly updated its satellite layer multiple times in the following months to reflect the damage. However, if you check now, recent imagery in many affected neighborhoods has reverted to older, pre-January 2025 views. Homes that burned are shown as intact, and the visible burn scar has diminished or disappeared in places. I personally watched dozens and dozens of homes burn during the fire. It’s pretty odd that the images would revert back to 2025 images to make it look undamaged.
