Protected Areas generate a huge amount of cultural value; our latest paper (sciencedirect.com/science/ar…) uses social media photos and machine learning to map cultural value across the length of Brazil's iconic coastline.

Here in PNAS we show that Amazonian sustainable-use protected areas catalyze many co-benefits resulting in dramatic improvements in local resident welfare well beyond biodiversity protection. Led by @Campos_Silva_JV pnas.org/content/118/40/e210…@ueaenv @ConBiology @institutojurua

Totally agree with Bill about this. For a slightly different perspective check out our article from 2014: Multilinguismo nas ciências ambientais: Ahora ya! (don't worry... it's in English) link.springer.com/article/10…

The domination of English as the language of science can hinder some scientists for whom English is not their first language and result in research being ignored. Article discusses some solutions to this important problem including work of @tatsuya_amano bit.ly/3mpvLRM

Conservation is complicated and there are no 'silver bullets'. We certainly need to increase reforestation here in Brazil, but as this article shows, doing it badly could be worse than doing nothing.
