WATCH: Say what you will about @RahmEmanuel, the man talks about education like he means it. The rhetorical vacuum behind him is vast.

For decades, I’ve hoped our nation’s leaders would not only highlight student achievement challenges when scores come out, but keep them front and center year-round—and advance real solutions and innovation to solve the crisis. Whatever your politics or point of view, it is extraordinary to see the nation’s First Lady using her bully pulpit to do just that.
KNOWLEDGE IS THE FOUNDATION OF AMERICAN CIVILIZATION   Only 22% of America’s 12th-graders are proficient in mathematics and only 35% in reading, according to NAEP’s 2024 national sampling.  Our nation’s average scores have reached their lowest levels in 20 years.   America must strive to improve.  Today, we can take proactive steps to enhance our children’s academic growth by leveraging AI as a tool in the education process.     Our teachers are already embracing the use of AI to improve K-12 academic performance.  2,700 schools participated in the K-12 AI Workshop I hosted with Zoom Communications on January 16, 2026.  The White House Presidential AI Challenge (K-12) has participants from all 50 states, plus Puerto Rico and Washington DC.      Access to the classical studies is now instantaneous, because of AI - literature, science, art, philosophy, mathematics, and history - Humanity’s entire corpus of information is available in the comfort of your home.     AI provides a personalized experience, adaptive to the needs of each student.  Our children can develop deeper critical thinking and independent reasoning abilities, plus boost their analytical skills and problem-solving capabilities by using AI as a tool.   The biproduct - a more well-rounded lifestyle for our children – freeing up time for being with friends, family, playing sports, and developing interests beyond school.  But we must balance our tech optimism with caution.  The safety of our next generation is always paramount.   Shouldn’t teachers use AI to deliver the most current, accurate knowledge to your child?  And if private tutoring isn’t an option, shouldn’t technology empower students to strengthen their weaknesses at home?

If you’re serious about the science of reading, it’s a curious move to route $10 million through the teachers’ union to design the training—especially when implementation quality is the whole ballgame.

I appreciate anyone who takes time to engage with these random thoughts of mine and i'll always reflect on pushback, good faith debate, and alternative view points. That said, this is a prime example of the onus always ending up back on Black men, regardless of the situation. #colorcommentary

Read of the day. About reading and its relationship to content knowledge. Hirsch was always ahead of his time.
It's not just phonics: Schools have failed to teach reading because they ignore 50 years of findings in cognitive psychology that reading depends on general knowledge. ED Hirsch has been banging this drum for a long time but Ed Schools shut their ears because the whole idea was unromantic & had a vaguely right-wing aroma. Now he joins with Dan Willingham to make a strong case that kids can't read if they don't have the background knowledge that makes sense of the rarer vocabulary, allusions, and understandings that allow us to read between the lines - which all reading requires. educationnext.org/rediscover…

New national data from the Turning the Tassel report, by @actwithagency, shows that within 10 years of completing high school, public charter school alumni earn $22,000 more per year than district school peers, are more likely to earn a college degree (38% vs. 31%), and own homes at higher rates. Every child deserves a school that sets them up to thrive, not just on graduation day, but for life. I’m here because the people in this room believe something the world has spent centuries trying to disprove, that Black children are born perfect. Perfect, by the hand of God, but born into a world that can’t wait to ruin them. cc: @selmekki @Teacherishx @ccoleiii @TorraineWalker @CenterBlackEd #Blackprint20 open.substack.com/pub/citize…

✨🇦🇫This Black History Month, let’s celebrate the incredible contributions of African Americans! As African American, I’m humbled but yet proud to share my journey: 1. The first and only African American superintendent for Haywood County Schools and appointed the first African American principal at Haywood High School (Dorothy Bond) and the first head African American varsity Tomcat football coach (Tim Seymour). 2. The first African American Superintendent of the Year for the Southwest Region ’24. 3. The youngest African Americans to serve as superintendent in Tennessee at age 31. 4. The longest-serving African American superintendent in Tennessee—15 years, plus 3 years at the Department of Education. 5. The only African American to serve three districts as superintendent and at the Department of Education. 6. The longest-serving African American superintendent for JMCSS and the second longest overall. 7. Among the few African American National Blue Ribbon School principals in the state of Tennessee. 8. The first African American promoted directly from the classroom to principal and from principal to superintendent. Together, we can learn, share, and uplift every voice—because every story matters! 🧡🖤💚❤️ #BlackHistoryMonth #EducationLeadership …and now one can understand why I'm unapologetic about serving my God — I know who's “first” in my life.
