Using powerful live imaging and mouse models, we identify hierarchical roles for optineurin in outer segment phagocytosis, phagosome maturation, and lysosome biogenesis. These are unaffected in AMD, suggesting that the RPE prioritizes removal of phagocytosed cargo in disease.
