New Jersey Transit has a pair of 600-person boats on standby to ferry soccer fans across the Hudson River in case of a transit meltdown at New York Penn Station during the FIFA 2026 World Cup matches at MetLife stadium, the agency announced today.
If necessary, the boats will get fans from New York City to Weehawken, New Jersey, and then onto buses bound for MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

The comparison is not apples to apples, with Lincoln Financial Field located far closer to the center of Philadelphia than either MetLife Stadium or Gillette Stadium.
However, it does mean that it is currently possible to travel, on a World Cup match-day, by rail for a much lower price from New York City to Philadelphia’s venue (a 96-mile journey) compared to New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium (an 18-mile journey).

And Gov Murphy is part owner of Gotham FC. He has a vested interest in trying to get people more excited about soccer.
But he never had the right to put a tax burden on NJ for it.
All of these other cities are benefiting from a tax windfall from the matches. New Jersey is literally just hosting the games but solely responsible for transit, logistics, and security. NYC is getting all the economic stimulus. Sherrill has the right to be pissed at Murphy.
